“Come back?” I raised an eyebrow at her.

“Just going to do handover and shower, give me an hour.” I grabbed her by the waist of her uniform and pulled her back against me.

She squealed in surprise and melted into me. My lips searched out hers but stopped short of a kiss. Her sweet breath, hot, mixed with mine.

“Promise?” I found myself needing her, maybe it was the date which had me on edge.

“Yes, Kaden, I promise.” Our breath mingled as I studied her face.

Her hands cupped the side of my face and concern laced her eyes. “Hey.” She searched my face for any sign of what was going on inside my head. I closed my eyes, I couldn't allow her to see how scared I was to be alone tonight.

Sensing something wasn’t quite right, she gave me a quick kiss on the lips. “I’ll be back.’ Her voice was full of promise and my heart steadied a little.

I was fucking falling deep, one look from her and I couldn't fucking breathe. My lips grazed hers in a light kiss before my tongue slipped inside and swirled gently inside her mouth. My senses ignited, a reminder she was safe. Alive and well.

“Kaden, before I go, tell me why Davies called you Sarg.”

Her hand stilled on the door where she stood, she pulled her bottom lip between her teeth and chewed on it, deep in thought. I could see she was waiting for an answer.

“I am a Sargent, babe.”

“How?” Confusion washed over her face. “Your army gear says….”

“I know what it says, Gracie-May, but there is more to it. One day I’ll tell you.”

She nodded before leaving the room, taking the air with her and leaving me alone with nothing but my thoughts.

I was Lieutenant Kaden James of Rouge River, but my uniform and file stated Sargent, because that was who I am. I needed to be front line and I did that as a Sargent, it kept me under the radar.

War was where I needed to be, to exercise the beast I had built. To be the killer my father bred. At home, I was a Lieutenant, honourable and civil.

I needed to separate the two or I would be tempted to wage war in a civilian world where that type of hate couldn't live.

I used Sargent Kaden James to seek the dark screams of war, to quell my raging nightmares. To sink me into the abyss which was Ari.

But now, I had a beautiful lady who needed me as much as I needed her.
