Not that I’d neglected my own social life. I still hooked up regularly, but sometimes it wasn’t as much fun as it used to be. I shook the thoughts away.
“Dude, you okay? You look like you’re having a seizure and I didn’t bring my medical bag.”
“Haha. I was shaking a funk that slipped through uninvited.”
I ordered another couple of drinks. Jax didn’t seem too interested in checking out any potential hookups, probably because he was barely alive right now. I shouldn’t have brought him out, but I was selfish.
“How did you get started with the kids? This morning was fun. I wouldn’t mind doing it on the regular,” Jax asked.
Yes! “I was on a morning run one time and noticed the group on the basketball court. They saw me watching and invited me to play. I registered with the Star Finders Youth Network straightafter and have been doing it for a few years. The kids are amazing.”
Volunteering at Star Finders was my thing. As the oldest of three brothers, I didn’t exactly feel excluded. Even with the younger two being twins, we were all super close. But I’d always felt like I needed a thing that was mine and no one else’s.
Volunteering my time was that thing for me.
The kids who came to Star Finders were all teenagers in foster care or from low-income families and had various backgrounds. They just needed a little guidance, mentoring, and a sense of belonging. And I wouldn’t deny that the weekly basketball game was a good workout.
“Can you give me the details to sign up?”
“Sure.” I took a swig of my beer. “Can you keep it between us? You’ll meet my brothers at some point, and this is something I…”
Jax raised his beer. “I get it. This is your thing. Your secret is safe with me. Oh, look, I found the person just for you.”
My gaze followed his nod.
“Fills out a suit. Broody. Fucking silver fox.” I groaned. “I think I just got pregnant.”
The man was sex on legs. His silver hair was just long enough to grab hold of while he pounded my ass, which wasn’t something I let just anyone do, but this guy? Damn. My dick thickened as the silver fox downed two fingers of scotch in one go.
“You’re going to have to get him before the drink does,” Jax said.
“You’re right there. Let me buy you one last drink.”
He laughed. “You’re confident.”
I gestured to my carefully picked outfit.
“Well, if it isn’t my favorite Spencer.”
I turned around to greet Tanner. The man had the face of an all-American boy with the body of a Greek god, and best of all,he’d made it clear he was willing to break all his rules for a night with me. Sadly for him, I had my rules, and I wasn’t willing to break them.
Tanner gasped as Jax turned around in his seat.
“Jax Fucking Brooks. What the fuck are you doing here?”
Tanner practically jumped over the bar to hug Jax, who was stunned into silence.
“Hi, Tan…Tanner. Sorry, force of habit.”
Tanner smiled wider. “Hey, you know I’ll always be Tan to you.”
“How do you guys know each other?” I asked.
Tan jumped in straight away. “I dated Jax’s little sister in high school before I realized boys were my thing.”
“What?” Jax straightened.
“Oh yeah, I guess you’d left for the military by the time I came out.”
