Jax finished his beer. “So you’re…?”
“As gay as a summer’s day parade.”
“Right.”
Someone called Tanner’s name from behind the bar, so he had to go back to work.
“If you’re going to hit up Mr. Silver Fox over there, I’m going to head out. It’s time to catch up on sleep.”
“So, you and Tan…” I teased, drawing out the nickname he’d called Tanner.
He snorted. “Dude, I found out he was gay a minute ago. Haven’t seen him since he was eighteen.”
“Aww, you left for the military because you were in love with your sister’s boyfriend. How cute. You know this is the stuff romance novels are made of, right?”
Jax punched me in the gut. “You’re a dick, and I’m out.”
I watched him walk through the ever-expanding crowds around the tables for a second before setting my eyes ontonight’s prize. Sure enough, the sexy silver fox was still on the hard stuff.
“Tough day?” I asked, sitting on the stool next to him.
“You could say that.”
He rotated the glass between his fingers, determined to ignore me, but I wasn’t going down without a fight.
“Top-shelf scotch shouldn’t be enjoyed on your own.”
“That so?”
“That is so. But I’m a giving kind of guy, so I’ll let you let me buy you the next one.”
The guy pinned me with his eyes, and fuck me, I had to suck in a breath. He was…intense…and now I needed to know justhowintense.
“I’ll pass.”
“Are you always this hard to charm?” I squirmed in my seat, my belly pooling with need as his lips curled up just a tad.
“Not always. Sometimes, I lower my standards.”
“Ouch. My heart breaks.”
“How come I get the feeling your heart is the least of your concerns right now?”
Lior
Ihad to admit the guy’s confidence was sexy as fuck. I’d take much pleasure in bringing him down a notch or two.
“You’re right. My heart is dead, but the whole rest of me is very much alive and at your disposal.”
Fuck, he looked like he’d put up with just the right amount of fight to make it fun.
The bartender appeared in my periphery, ready to refill my glass. Without breaking eye contact, I covered my glass with my hand to indicate I was done.
How did I go from a night of destructive thoughts and numbness through alcohol to scoring a hookup?
“You cut right to the chase, don’t you?” I drawled, lowering the pitch of my voice.
He turned on his stool to face me. “I know what I like, and I like what I know.”
