Laurel scoffed. She certainly didn't believe it, but at least it made her feel a little bit better that he was about as sure as she was about the failure of his marriage. If he thought that it would turn out well, she would probably be very upset about it.
“So, okay, we're actually going to do this?”
“Yeah, we are. I have a feeling that it's going to cause some problems, but I also have a feeling that it is going to be a really good thing.”
She glanced at the way he looked at her. Laurel was going to have to keep her wits about her. Being around him when he was constantly by her was going to take some getting used to. A lot of getting used to.
Chapter 6
Nathan’s phone chimed and he saw that it was Vincent's number calling and he picked up, unsure if it was his boss or Mallory wanting an update. “Hello?”
“Hey, what's going on?” It was Vincent and it felt like it was a trick question to Nathan. Vincent most likely knew that Mallory had called, and he probably knew all of it, so Nathan didn’t know what to say. He wanted to hold as much of it to his chest as he could but knew he wouldn’t. Nathan wouldn’t volunteer information, either.
“Not much.”
“I hear that you're in Brighton.”
“Yeah, your wife sent me out this way.”
“Is that so? Do you work for my wife now, too?”
Nathan agreed and waited for Vincent to just come out with it. He usually wasn't so ready to beat around the bush, and Nathan didn’t know what to think of that. He had a tone.
“So, what happened?”
“I had dinner with her parents and invited her to stay with me while we look for her real ones. She seems pretty miserable there, so I got her a job at the Academy. She is quite smart and helpful.”
Nathan had never been good at lying or anything close to it, so he felt it was best just to come out with it. He wasn’t one hundred percent sure if it would work, but he at least needed to give it a try. Nathan tried to give just enough truth to make it believable and squash further questions.
“Okay.” Vincent said.
“That's all you're going to say?” Nathan asked as he didn’t know what okay meant.
“I mean, it's definitely not the way I thought it was going to go, but I could see it coming. It was going to happen, eventually.”
“How so?”
“Come on, you been eying that human since the beginning. I remember you talking about her a couple of times. You would light up and man, you have never acted like that before. I figured the two of you were just an item. When you said that you hadn't even been together, I knew that there had to be some feelings attached. Makes it a bit difficult, doesn't it?”
Nathan sighed and sat down on the chair next to him.
“Man, you have no idea.”
“Have you thought about what you're going to do if Nancy finds out? You know she is not going to be happy about that.”
“Can you think of anything that she's actually happy of?”
He heard Vincent chuckle. “Not really. To hell with fate, huh?”
Nathan gritted his teeth. It wasn't the first time that Nathan had heard Vincent say something like that. He always brushed it off, like it would be so easy to say the hell with it all and do whatever he wanted. It just wasn't the case, though. It was easy to say that it was no big deal, until the person was faced with a shunning by their family. It wasn’t an option that many people took, and they certainly didn’t do it lightly.
“So, you're going to go through with it?”
“Yeah, she's getting ready, and we'll be on our way back to London tonight. I’m going to wait till the sun goes down and take her that way.”
“I bet you are.”
“What are you going on about?”
