“Yeah.”
Laurel’s heart fell. He hadn't gotten rid of Nancy. Then, what was he doing here?
“Well, you can tell Mallory that I'm fine. I haven't jumped off a building or anything. I am just trying to get used to this whole human life thing. It's a lot harder to come back here than I thought it would be.”
“My offer still stands for you to come to the Academy.”
“As much as I would like to do that, it really is something that I have to do first.” She paused for some time.
“There is something you want to share?” Nathan asked and he wanted to know what she was trying to hide.
“Since finding out that these guys aren’t my parents, I want to find out who they actually are. It is going to be complicated, because I don't have much information to go off of, but I have to believe that I will find them.” Laurel said in one single breath.
“What can I do to help?” Nathan was shocked but he didn’t want her to feel awkward.
“You’ve already done enough coming here. It was really good to see you again. I know you have other things to do, and your world is done with me. I just have to accept it.”
“Why would you think that we’re done with you? You can't come into our world and then just disappear back into yours like nothing happened. You're part of us now.”
Laurel wanted so desperately to believe that.
“Vincent has some really good investigators in London, and I wasn't joking about still needing you at the Academy.”
“What do you need me for? Am I supposed to teach the preschoolers how to fly? That would be quite a feat for a human.”
“They don't start flying for very long time. They won't even be able to shift until they hit puberty. When they’re young, it’s really controlling the dragon from the inside first.”
Laurel just shook her head. There was so much that she didn't know. “I wouldn't want to impose on you like that.”
“Stop talking nonsense. It would really mean a lot to me if you would say yes.” He was being serious all of a sudden, and she so badly wanted to say yes. If Laurel could find her parents, her real parents, and also spent time with Nathan, it would literally be the best of both worlds. It also meant that she would be able to spend just a little bit more time in the supernatural world that she found so fascinating. What could be better than that?
She was ready to say yes, but then she realized that she would have nowhere to stay. The place she’d been staying with Mallory and Ethen had been rented out, most likely. London was a nightmare to rent in. Although the Academy would pay well, she did not believe that she would make enough to actually live there.
“What's wrong?” Nathan asked as he saw her worried about something.
“I'm just wondering where I would be able to find a place to live. You know how crazy it is to rent in the city.”
“You can come stay with me.”
“What?” Laurel frowned and she was little shocked. Maybe she heard that wrong.
He nodded. “It just kind of came out, but really, I have plenty of room. I have several extra bedrooms that you are more than welcome to.”
“What about Nancy?” He groaned like he’d forgotten her for a moment.
“I probably wouldn't want her to find out about it, but she never comes over. She doesn't like my place, calling it my bachelor pad. I've already been told quite specifically, that as soon as we're married, I have to get rid of it.”
“Bummer.”
“Exactly. I have a feeling that that’s what my marriage is going to consist of. A whole lot of bummer.”
She scoffed. “I don't think I will ever understand all of your ways, but I do believe that this whole fate and mated for life thing is the hardest for me to understand. It all seems to make you miserable. Who wants that?”
Nathan chuckled. “Just be thankful that you are not a shifter. If you were, I'm sure that you would be promised off, too. You may or may not detest them.”
“How is that fate?”
He shrugged. “I guess somewhere down the line, we are meant to be together. Who knows, maybe she will talk one of my enemies to death and save us all.”
