“Girl,” he stated firmly. “Or a boy. Doesn’t matter as long as they’re ours.”
He leaned down and pressed a kiss to my lips.
“How long?” His next question brought a smile to my lips.
“Before we got married.” I wiggled my eyebrows at him.
“So, all the sickness…?” he questioned me again.
“My body trying to adjust, but it couldn’t. Doctor said bed rest for at least two weeks.” I saw the look on Law’s face drop. I knew he loved having me at his races, but this was important for us to be able to make sure this baby was safe. “That only means missing Dover, then I’ll be able to go to Talladega, since it will be here, not much traveling.”
He seemed to like that answer and picked me up once again, taking us to our bed.
“Can we tell my parents tomorrow?” Law asked between kisses that he trailed down my neck. “I want to savor this just a little longer before being bombarded with grandparents.”
“Oh God, my mother is going to kill me.” I thunked my head onto the bed. “She told me she refused to become a grandparent before the age of fifty.”
“Too bad. You’ve got a Kane in you now, sugar.” Law laughed and cuddled next to me.
“I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
-----
“What about this one?” Law held up one of the many different baby onesies we had picked up when he came back from Dover. We had been trying to figure out how to tell his parents, but nothing was jumping out at us.
I had already told Leah and my ears were still ringing from the screams coming through the phone. Axel had taken over the conversation, not realizing what had happened and once I told him, his screams joined hers. I had hung up the phone, letting them take out their excitement on each other. They had promised to come down right after the new show was over in order to celebrate, and by celebrate, Leah had texted me we would have a chocolate marathon instead of a wine one. You know, because of the baby. I didn’t object.
“Nah, too cheesy.” I waved away the piece of clothing that saidOf course I’m cute, have you seen my daddy?
“Then what do you have in mind?” Law snapped and then threw me a look that he was over this last hour of us trying to figure this out.
“Well.” I pulled out a box from my side of the nightstand and sat down on the bed across from Law. “I kind of made this when I couldn’t sleep last night.”
I handed him the box and let him open it. It was a pair of grey booties with a piece of paper in the lid that said,Will you be my grandparents?
I had made one for my parents too, that we could show them over video chat. I thought it was cute and a simple way to do it that would definitely make Cary and my mother cry. Law sat there with the box in his hands and looked up at me with tears in his eyes.
“No.” Tears started to form in mine. “Stop that. You know how I am right now!”
I slapped his arm as a tear fell from his eye and one followed from mine. I had become more emotional in the last week, the distance away from Law eating at me, and when he came back home last night, early, I lost it completely. We went to sleep with him holding me as I sobbed into a pillow, so happy to have him back in my arms.
“I love it.” His voice was soft as he closed the box and moved it to the side. “I think you should get dressed, so we can go to their house for dinner.”
I jumped from the bed and made quick work to put on a dress that wasn’t too tight. My body had been trying to get used to what was happening, so tight clothes usually broke me out into hives and anything too loose made me feel self-conscious. I had found a few dresses I already owned that were loose enough to fit just right, for now at least.
“Let’s go, sugar.” Law stuck his head into the closet and pulled me out when he saw I was already dressed. I slipped on some flats because he dragged me out of the house and to his truck. “Don’t you even try it.”
Law’s words stopped me as I went to open the passenger door. I looked back at him confused at what he meant.
“I’ll help you in.”
“Oh, what a gentleman.” I held a hand to my heart as Law picked me up effortlessly and sat me into the passenger seat. He leaned over and buckled me up, his hand lingering across my stomach before he closed the door on me. He always did that now, lingering touches to tell me just how happy he was. He didn’t need to say it, just in the possessiveness he gave off now said it all.
I held the bag that housed the box we were going to give his parents and I was so happy that the drive over wasn’t a long one. I had no idea when Law was going to want to give them this gift or if he was going to wait till the end of the night. It was always a mystery with this man since he always had a plan, even if I wasn’t aware of it.
“Anya!” Cary was waiting at the door for us when we pulled up, but I knew better than to get out of the truck alone. I waited for Law to come over, open the door, and lift me out of my seat and set me on the ground. Cary pushed Law out of the way and took my arm, leading me into the house without a care that Law was standing there looking in awe at both of us.
“Son.” Luke stood by the door, waiting for us all to enter.
