Chapter Twenty-Three

Please go see the doctor,Law had said.

If only it had been that simple.

I was sitting at home trying to figure out what I was going to tell Law. I had something planned out, but the words I was going to say needed to be perfect. It had been a month of constant sickness from the traveling, or so we had thought. Once we had left the Charlotte race over the weekend, Law insisted I go to the doctor to find out if there was something they could prescribe to me.

He hated seeing me get sick, but there was nothing we had tried that would alleviate it. I had stayed in bed for the last two days until Law had kicked me out of the bed and told his mother to drive me to the local doctor’s office.

I had sat in the waiting room with Cary for thirty minutes before the doctor took me back and it only took an hour for him to tell me why I had been sick these last few months.

I was pregnant.

Apparently it had happened a few weeks before Law and I had gotten married and with the traveling, my body just didn’t have time to settle into the changes it was trying to create. He had said this wasn’t just morning sickness, but my body telling me to relax and take some time to adjust. He had sworn me to bed rest for at least two weeks. When I pulled up Law’s schedule that worked. It would mean not going to his next race, but the one after that was Talladega, which meant I wouldn’t have to travel to get to it.

Now, I just had to find a way to tell him. I hadn’t told Cary anything, not wanting it to get to Law before I could tell him, but I had made her stop by the store quickly, saying I needed a new dress to wear for a date with Law tonight. I had insisted she wait in the car, so she couldn’t see me going to the maternity area.

Now I was sitting in our room, just waiting for him to come back from the track. He was leaving tomorrow morning for Dover and this time, I wouldn’t be going with him, so I needed to tell him now before I lost the nerve and another week passed us by.

I heard the front door slam shut and Law’s footsteps run up the stairs. I moved quickly to the closet and stripped out of the clothes I had on. I pulled out the dress I had picked up and pulled it over my head.

“Anya?”

“In the closet,” I called to Law, smoothing the dress over me. It was about three sizes too big, but it was only a medium. I knew if I was anything like I had seen photos of Cary when she was pregnant with Law, I was going to need this for only the first few months I started showing.

“That doesn’t fit.” Law’s words sent a laugh through my whole body. I turned around and held out my hands so he could get a better look.

“You don’t think?” I looked at him innocently, him having no idea what was about to happen.

“If you need new dresses, I’ll take you.” He made his way over to me and pulled at the dress and bunched it up on the side. “This.” He shook the fabric in his hands. “Does not fit.”

“I think I’ll grow into it.” I shrugged my shoulders.

“How the hell would you ever grow into this, sugar?” Law looked at me with questioning eyes.

“I mean, normally a woman starts showing after the first three months, so I figured, why not start buying things a little early.”

“Showing?” Law dropped his hand and stared me straight in the eyes. “What are you talking about, Anya?”

I patted Law on the shoulder and moved past him. “I mean, if this baby is anything like you, I’m pretty sure I’ll be as big as your—” My words were stopped by Law scooping me into his arms and holding me to his chest.

“You’re pregnant?” The excitement on his face wasn’t one to miss. Moisture pooled in his eyes and his smile was so wide, I could see all of his teeth.

“Yes.” I grabbed a hold of his face. “I’m pregnant.”

He spun us around and held me even tighter, then set me on the floor and dropped to his knees.

“We’re pregnant.” He spoke to my belly and kissed it. “Does my mother know?”

“No.” I fingered my hands through his hair and he mumbled to my belly.

“We are going to take such good care of you. Your mother is an amazing woman and I know we’ll love you so much no matter what you are.”

I hadn’t even thought about the sex yet, because to me, it didn’t matter, and even though Law was saying it didn’t matter to him, I wondered.

“Do you want a boy or girl?” I asked.

Law stood and held me in his arms, clearly not caring about the oversized dress now.
