“Sugar.” He tried to start arguing with me, but I wasn’t having it.
“If I’m going to be a part of this, Law, I need to know everything. I need to be in the loop,” I said firmly. “Tony didn’t treat me with kid gloves, so I don’t expect you to either. I’m here to stay, so I’m entitled to know all of it. Even the bad, Law.”
He pursed his lips, not liking what I had to say, but I needed him to know I was serious about this, about us. I wasn’t leaving and that meant I wasn’t going to just stand back and not know what has happening in his career.
“Fine.” He digressed, but with not much enthusiasm.
I took his face in both of my hands and brought our foreheads together. “Lawson.”
I said his name with such assurance. Like a mantra to myself, knowing he was here with me now. “I almost lost you.”
“You didn’t, though,” he quickly added.
I knew he didn’t want to go down this path, but I needed to, just this once.
“I almost didn’t get to say goodbye.” I was looking him straight in the eyes through my blurred vision. My tears were building, but I refused to blink to let them escape. Law was all about having the last word, so I wanted to know what he was going to say this time and I didn’t want it to be marred with pity.
“Sugar,” he started. “Anya.”
My name hung in the air between us.
“I told you.” Law’s lips landed against mine roughly, like he was punishing me for ever thinking these thoughts. “We’ll never say goodbye.”
