When I turned the corner I slowed my pace, though, not sure of what I would expect once I got to the room. Would he be happy to see me? That was a silly question, but one I felt in my heart. I had no idea what was going to happen and my mind was taking control over my thoughts now. Instead of the love I had felt over the past month, it was filled with doubt. Doubt that Law would want me to come to a race again, doubt that I could keep doing this and it not wreck my soul.

I took a step into the hospital room where Law was lying in bed and looking out the window. I waited there for a few seconds, taking in the view I had. He looked to be filled with tension. His shoulders were raised, resting close to his ears. His lips were pursed and his eyebrows scrunched together, like he was in some whole other world than sitting in a hospital bed after just being in a wreck.

I didn’t know if I had made a noise or if Law just knew I had been standing there, but he looked back toward me and his entire presence changed. A smile crept across his lips, his eyes lit with joy, shoulders relaxed, and he extended an arm out to me. His hand was lifted off the bed, asking me to come to him, but I was frozen in place.

Did I let him know how scared I was? Did I let him know how relieved I was now?

“Sugar.” The word barely came out as a whisper from his lips and it was the only word I needed.

I ran to his bed, bypassing his hand and throwing myself onto what was left of the mattress, and wrapped my arms around Law.

“Ooof.” He let out a sound I knew meant he hadn’t been expecting this, but I acted without thinking.

“I’m so sorry, did I hurt you?” I pulled away, trying to check that Law was okay, but he pulled me right back down into him, wrapping his arms tightly around me.

“Don’t you dare move,” Law whispered into my hair. His lips came into contact with the top of my head. I lay there, not saying anything, just basking in the moment. I jerked up, though, when I realized I had finally spoken for the first time since the accident.

I held a hand over my mouth and looked down at Law. He had the bed raised so we weren’t lying flat, but because of how I was lying, I was hovering on top of him.

“What’s wrong?” Law asked as he drew my hand away from my face. “I want to see all of you.”

“I wanted the first words I said to you to be ‘I love you,’ not with me telling you I’m sorry.” I hung my head. I wanted every single moment Law and I had together from here on out to be perfect.

“I love you, sugar.” Law and I locked eyes.

“I love you, Law.” I leaned down to kiss his lips but drew back, not wanting to push him farther than he was able to.

“I love you guys too,” Tony said from behind me and I turned around to see him entering the room.

“Love you too, man.” Law laughed and held on to me tighter. I had no plans of going anywhere. “Thank you for taking care of her.”

“Didn’t have to.” Tony shot back at Law and then looked at me.

It was true. After the initial shock of it all, I didn’t let Tony take care of me. I made sure to be there for every conversation he had with the doctor. I refused to leave or take a break from being at Law’s side. I had no intention of abandoning the man I loved and Tony had seen that. He didn’t treat me with kid gloves. He let me know all the dirty details of the car crash and that the car was completely totaled and we would have to get Law into his backup.

I had signed up to be a part of this life and the moment I had stepped into the emergency waiting room hours ago, I had set my fate at being by Law’s side for every race to come.

Tony nodded to Law and my eyesight moved from the man in front of me to the man who was holding me. Law stared up at me with wonder in his eyes.

“You amaze me.” His words built up the pride I had felt for him the first time I watched him race.

“I will never leave you, Law.” I leaned in to give him another kiss.

“Please don’t.” He kissed me back and the doctor came into the room.

“Two weeks, no extracurricular activities.” The doctor looked between the both of us and wagged his finger. “And I mean NO activities.”

I giggled as we listened to the instructions the doctor wanted Law to follow. Light work over the next two weeks and then after that he could ease back in. He didn’t want him to jump back in because based on how badly Law had wrecked, the doctor said he shouldn’t have been able to wake up.

“I would appreciate you not saying that in front of her.” Law’s arms were strangling my body. I put a hand on his chest, trying to relax the beast that wanted to come out.

“I appreciate it, thank you.”

The doctor left the room and Tony let out a laugh.

“It’s not funny,” Law practically yelled. “He shouldn’t be saying that in front of her.”

“I can take it, Law.” I looked back down at him. “Anything about you, Ineedto know.”
