He followed the motion and hissed. “It’s only warded to be invisible to humans and their planes. You’ve been there, so you should be able to get in. But I’m not sure it’s safe.”
“What about the shifter school?”
He shook his head. “There are rumors that some turned packs attacked it, but I’m not sure.”
I whirled around, seeking Dasha or her mates or any shifter I knew.
A roar rang through the night, much too loud, and my blood skittered in my veins.
Ditching my quest for the shifters, I dashed back to Andre. “Open a warphole to Nightdwellers! I’ll make one right next to you!”
“I’ll fend them off for as long as I can!” yelled Hunter.
“Me too!” Eva screamed as she ran up to us.
I pushed them both behind me, and faster than I ever had before, I flung open a warphole. As this one had to be large enough for cars to fit through, it took a bit more effort than normal, but after a few seconds, I got there. Andre was working to expand his too, just a few steps behind.
“Drive through!” I screamed at the closest car.
The poor person behind the wheel, a shifter whose name I couldn’t remember, stared back at me wild-eyed, his hands gripping the wheel.
Hunter shot a blast of green magic that bounced off the car’s hood to get the driver’s attention. The shifter revved the engine, and drove into the warphole.
Car after car passed through, and with each one, I breathed a little easier. A sense of relief flooded me when I noticed Dasha and the Tornas driving by and waving.
When the last vehicle disappeared, I allowed myself to glance up again. The demons were still flying towards us, and were now close enough to be identifiable.
Ishtar and Lucifer flew in the front, their wings beating, their eyes blazing red in the dark night sky. The queen of darkness curled her lips up at the sight of me.
“Wait!” someone screamed in the distance.
I broke my stare from Ishtar, and whipped around. Simone sprinted toward us, Flynn’s massive body hanging limp in her arms.
I sucked in a breath as my attention darted between her and the demon horde. She was fast, but was she fast enough?
“Andre! Keep your warphole open!” I screamed, releasing mine and twirling to face the demons. I nodded to Eva and Hunter. “Fight them back.”
Dark magic rose within me and, taking aim, I let it fly. In the black of night, my trajectory was difficult to track, but Lucifer roared as my power pushed him backward.
Shocked, Ishtar stopped flying, and every single little devil behind her halted too.
“Itoarazicus!” Eva cried, aiming for a daeva complete with a cloud of swirling, green, noxious gas around it.
A moment later, the gas disappeared. Eva had bound the demon’s magic, rendering it powerless.
The daeva let out a screech and nosedived straight for her, but Hunter stepped in front of her.
“Morsultimus!” he yelled, pulling out the big guns, the killing curse for royals and greater demons.
His spell hit, and seconds later, the daeva splattered to the ground.
Everyone seemed to still.
“You dare use our magic against us?” Ishtar boomed. “You dare use magic born of darkness, girl?”
My mouth dried up as she turned the full power of her horrible gaze upon me, and a ball of fire bloomed in her palms. I raised my hands, calling my black magic to defend me.
And then, unexpectedly, a squeezing sensation engulfed my skull.
