The hair on the nape of my neck lifted. “They’re coming, and we’ll be completely exposed,” I murmured, my voice thin, laden with fear. “There’s not even traffic to hide in.”

“Get us out of here, Odie,” Eva choked out.

“Andre!” I pushed past my rising terror, and yelled for the other warper. “Andre! I need you!”

“Just a sec!” my friend called back as his head poked out of a car he’d just settled someone into.

“What’s up?” he asked after dashing our way.

“The demons,” I whispered, trying not to incite panic. “They’re coming. Right now. We need to warp these people out of here.”

Andre stepped back and scanned the skies. “How do you—?”

“Our scars,” Eva spat out. “Mine burned right after we broke the prisoners out, but now, Lucifer and Ishtar are muting their response.”

“Craaaaap,” Andre breathed. “How fast can they be here?”

“Not sure,” I answered. “But probably faster than we think.”

I didn’t know of a type of demon that could transport others, like warpers, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they existed.

Even as I mulled that over, another possibility—one that could easily come to fruition—filled me with cold dread.

The demons held Spellcasters hostage. Professor Tittelbaum was trapped there, no doubt bound to the demons’ will with black magic, and he was a powerful warper, one of the best. They could just usehim.

That was definitely what they’d do.

“Actually, they have Tittelbaum, so expect them at any second,” I amended, making Andre swear. “We have to get the others out of here.”

“Right,” Andre said, twisting to face the group. All the prisoners were almost in the cars by now. “I’ll get them out—”

Eva shrieked and pointed up. “Look!”

My head snapped upward, and my heart stopped.

Red lights, thousands of gleaming, crimsoneyes, blinked in the sky.

“There’s no time to get them out of the car!” I yelled. “Eva, tell everyone to get in the cars and aim for the warpholes. Andre, come with me!” I grabbed his hand.

In the crowd, Diana yelled his name. Hunter shot me a confused look. In reply, I pointed up as we dashed past him.

A stream of expletives left my friend’s mouth as he caught up with me.

“We can’t go back to the fae academy. You’re not an approved warper,” he reminded me.

“Shit! Where can we go?”

Not Spellcasters either, but we needed a large building just like it. A fortress, somewhere secluded.

I released Andre’s arm. “Run in front of the car line. I’ll be right there. I need to find a shifter or a vampire.”

Unable to help myself, my eyes snapped to the sky. The lights had crept closer, so much closer. I could even see flashes of fire, and the neon green glow of either a succubus or daeva.

I sprinted over to the first vampire I saw—Francis. “Was your school taken over by the demons? And is it warded to keep away outsiders?”

His eyebrows furrowed. “Why—”

“Answer the question!” I gestured above.
