Myla walked throughthe door of the Nineteenth Precinct. It was definitely busier than the last time she had come, but then she remembered Kaleb had taken her in a different door.

The lobby was bustling with people in handcuffs, cops, people in suits, and even a child who stood crying by her mother’s side. She felt so bad for the little one as she stood by her mother, gripping her hand as her mother tried to calm one of the men in cuffs down while two cops held him.

“Can I help you?”

Myla jerked her head around and saw a cop in uniform behind a tall desk.“Yes, I’m supposed to meet Kaleb Hawkins.”

“Is he expecting you?”

“Yes...”

“I’ve got her.”

Myla turned and smiled.“Hello, Jeff.”

“Come on.I’ll take you up to him.”

“That would be great. Are you coming to lunch with us?”

Jeff grinned.“Probably not today.Maybe next time.”He held the door to the elevator open as she got in.

She glanced at him.“I’ve never asked, and you can tell me I’m being nosy, but do you have a girlfriend?”

“No.I had one, but we broke up.She got a promotion, but she had to move for it, and I didn’t want to leave.”

“Do you miss her?”

He shook his head.“Not really. We’d only been together a year.”

Myla’s eyes widened.“A year?That’s a long time.”

“Yeah, I guess,” Jeff said and shrugged.“I think I knew we weren’t meant to be.I didn’t keep looking at the time to see when she was coming, like some people I know.We didn’t have any chemistry. She was fine when she left, and I was, too.If we’d felt something for each other, it would have hurt a lot more than it did.”

Myla laughed at the thought of Kaleb watching the time. She knew who he was talking about, and it pleased her very much.

“Well, look what we have here.”

Jeff straightened.“Dude, she’s Kaleb’s, and he’s very protective of her.”

“Hell, I would be, too.”He stuck his hand out.“My name is Shane.”

She shook his hand.“Myla.It’s nice to meet you.”

The elevator doors opened, and the three stepped out and stopped.

Shane winked at her.“If you ever get sick of him, call me.”

“I’ll keep that in mind. But I can’t see Kaleb and me not being together.”

“Lucky bastard.”

Jeff snorted and grabbed hold of her elbow. It took twice as long to get to Kaleb’s desk because she had to stop and be introduced to several men.

She exhaled when she saw Kaleb and then looked up at Jeff.“I’m glad I had you with me.”

“Me, too. We’ll have to do this every time you come.”

“No.They’ll get used to me.”
