I was a nervous wreck. If I was pregnant, it changed everything.
Finally, Lacey’s car pulled into the driveway and she got out, carrying a white shopping bag. There was a wild grin on her face as she practically skipped up the porch steps.
I pulled open the door right before she could ring the bell, ushering her inside.
“I can’t believe it,” she said with clear excitement. “I’m going to be an auntie!”
“First of all, we’re not related. Secondly, I don’t even know if I’m pregnant yet.”
“I’d be an honorary aunt, of course.” She waved away my objection, not even addressing the second part of my statement.
Her words made me unexpectedly emotional. My anxiety about pregnancy was mostly centered around how everyone in my life would react to it. My parents...Hunter...Butch…
It felt good to know for sure that I had at least one person in my corner.
“Yeah, Lace, you would,” I agreed.
“Now, take the tests.” She thrust the bag at me.
“Tests? As in more than one?”
“They had three different brands at the store, so I got one of each.”
“Overkill much?”
“I’m thorough,” she said, moving behind me and giving me a small shove in the direction of the bathroom. “Now, go see if there’s a bun in that oven.”
When I got in the bathroom, I found three tests in the bag, like she said, along with a bottle of prenatal vitamins.
Talk about jumping the gun.
But five minutes later, I was standing in front of the sink in the bathroom, staring at three positive pregnancy tests. I felt curiously numb as I stood there, waiting for the truth to sink in.
I was pregnant. There was a life growing inside of me. I was going to be amom.
I had no idea how to do that. I’d never even been around kids before. There were no siblings, no younger cousins, nothing. Did I even know how to hold a baby?
God, I was so out of my element here.
“It’s been five minutes, Sabrina,” Lacey said from the other side of the door. I jumped, having almost forgotten she was waiting out there for me. “Tell me what the tests say.”
I lowered my gaze to my stomach in the mirror, wondering how far along I was. I’d been sneaking around with Butch since the poker run two weeks ago. That wasn’t very long. Would it even show up on a test that soon?
The only other option was the first night we were together. That was five weeks ago.
Oh my God, did I get pregnant the first time we had sex?
What if I’d never seen him again?
“Sabrina?” Lacey’s voice was worried now, so I snapped out of it and opened the door for her.
The good humor was gone from her face now, and I wondered what she saw in my own expression.
“I’m pregnant,” I said, and saying the words out loud cut through the numb fog that I was in. A smile spread across my face, and I felt happier than I’d ever been in my entire life. “I’m going to have a baby.”
Lacey let out a delighted squeal and threw her arms around me. I hugged her tightly, so happy that my child would have someone like her to count on.
Now, I just had to hope that Butch’s reaction would be a good one. It was hard to know how he was going to feel. He’d ended things between us because he was tired of a relationship that was going nowhere. What would he say to the news that he was going to be a father? Would he be happy, or had he already moved on?
