“Patrick,” I growl.
“We’ll need to go and see my parents too. There’s a lot to catch them up on.”
I raise my hands to my face. “Your mother is going to hate me.”
“No. She’ll be fine. She might be a bit angry at first and then we’ll introduce her to her granddaughter. That kid’s enough to brighten anyone’s day. Let alone her newly discovered grandparents’.”
I smile, but the thought terrifies me. All Jane Cross knows is that I broke her son’s heart.
I’m not sure how I’m going to face her.
For the whole weekend, the three of us are holed up together in the house just being together.
It’s bliss.
No one else knows we’re together or our story—I have yet to tell Lauren that Sophie is Patrick’s. I’m not sure how well that’s going to go down when I’ve kept it from her all that time.
But we’ve put the past behind us and we’re only looking forward.
It’s still hard when Patrick has to leave on Sunday to go home.
“See you on Friday, Dad.” Sophie’s taken to this whole thing like a duck to water. I think it’s because she’s had it worked out for a while.
Patrick’s Adam's apple bobs. She’s gone straight for the kill calling him dad, and it’s a lot for him to handle.
She hugs him tight and gives him a kiss on the cheek.
“I love you, Sophie. Be good for your mother.”
“Love you too.”
She glances between us and makes her way back into the house.
“She’s amazing,” he says.
“I know. We did good.”
He pulls me into his arms.
“I don’t want to go, but I have to,” he murmurs. “You know that, don’t you?”
“I do.”
“I love you.”
I freeze. It’s not the first time he’s said it, but saying it back to him is hard. But in typical Patrick fashion, he anticipates the reason for my hesitation.
“You’ll say it when you’re ready.” He hugs me tight and kisses my temple. “I know that.”
“I’m going to miss you.”
“I’ll miss you.” He leans back and his eyes drink me in. “Being with you again is everything.”
“For me too.”
I close my eyes as he kisses my forehead. “You call me if that Ian comes around again.”
“What are you going to do? Get in the car, drive all the way here, and deal with him?”
