“And what happens when you catch me?”

I shook my head, ignoring the way my dick jerked in my pants. When she turned around, I sneakily adjusted myself around and grabbed the keys to the lodge. I’d let her imagination run free at the thought.

“Let’s get outta here before I change my mind and hold you hostage here.”

I was going to buy this place from her parents. I didn’t care for how much or how long I’d be paying it off. I’d get on my knees and beg if I had to, reminding them of how happy it made their daughter. I could imagine the look on her face when she knew it was her permanent home.

“Aye aye, Sergeant,” she said, saluting me. She was making this incredibly difficult.

She thinks she's funny.

My eyes scanned the area while she locked up, making sure no one was around before fisting her ponytail and yanking her into my chest.

“You are going to get yourself in trouble, Ma’am,” I whispered against the crook of her neck, nipping at the flesh before running my lips across the same spot. “I love the way you taste.”

I guided her to the truck and helped her in, slamming the door shut. When I slid into my side and turned the key, the truck roared to life. Lucy gripped her phone tightly in her hand, bouncing her knee up and down rapidly as she texted the person on the other end.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“Jack wants me to pick up my stuff,” she replied.

I knew she was trying to remain strong, like he didn’t scare her, but the way she sat fidgeting and playing with the handle of the truck, she couldn’t fool me.

“Why don’t you wait for me? I don’t want you going alone.”

“It’s fine. I’d rather get it over with. I can take Marco’s other car, and I'll be quick.”

Anger bubbled in my chest, not at her, but for her. For his sake, he'd better give her the stuff and let her go.

“Alright, but if you need me, you call.”

I rolled down the window to take in some fresh air, chill caressed me, nipping at my skin. The sky was dark, and white flurries fell into my car gracefully. A beautiful instrumental rendition of Little Drummer Boy started playing, and I rested a hand over Lucy’s thigh, squeezing it every so often in reassurance.

Back home to the real world.

Back to figuring out how to make this work, when she had absolutely no knowledge of how deep my wounds ran, but I couldn’t blame her if it was too much.

If what I had been through was too much.

Chapter 14

SAM

My fingers thrummed a pattern against my thigh as I waited in his office, feeling awful for needing to see him on Christmas Eve. The door opened with a creak, and my chest throbbed as Dr. Thomas made his way over to the desk.

The walls of the room were a thick shade of white, while the furniture that adorned it was a sickly mix of gray and black. I wish Dr. Thomas would lighten up the room; there wasn’t even a decoration in sight. Black reminded me of death, the darkness that I had to sit in now that I wasn’t numbing it.

It was all too much, and sometimes being here caused more stress than it was worth.
