Maybe they’d give up once they realized it was locked.
He stayed perfectly still, his anxiety rising as a bead of sweat dripped from his chin onto the carpet below.
CLICK. CLICK. CLICK.
This guy was persistent. Kid could only hope he’d quit his search.
As the pitter patter of footsteps returned, Kid sighed, relieved.
The footsteps had almost completely faded when Maggie woke from her state with a start. She flailed about and screamed in agony.
A rush of adrenaline surged through Kid. He knelt and pressed his palm over her mouth, stifling her sound.
He listened for footsteps. Maybe the immortal was too far away to hear her. But a creak in the hall assured him that wasn’t the case.
The door burst open with a POP, the frame snapping into woodchips where the lock had been. The immortal rushed in.
What the fuck am I supposed to do?
He released Maggie and gripped tightly onto Hayde’s dagger.
The immortal flicked the room light on.
He was so tall he had to duck to enter the room.
“What do we have here?” he asked, drawing his sword from a sheath at his side.
Kid held the dagger before him, but he knew his odds of being able to challenge this massive immortal were slim.
The immortal approached and swung at him with his sword.
Kid ducked and rolled at his attacker.
As the immortal raised his sword again, Kid sliced into the back of his heel.
“Fuck!” the immortal wailed.
Kid dove out of his sword’s path.
“You fucking rat!”
He slashed at Kid, who rolled out of its path again and sprung back to his feet.
“Oh, you like games, do you?” the immortal asked. He swung his sword like a bat before him, cornering Kid, who looked around uneasily, uncertain how he would evade this next attack.
Kid started to roll again, but as the immortal swung his sword in his path, he retreated.
“I’m gonna slice you into a million fucking pieces…”
“Ah!”
Arms wrapped around the immortal’s neck.
It was Maggie. She screamed out like she was battling everything within her as she choked the immortal with her arms.
His wings, white and fluffy, expanded, forcing her arms back so that she went flying across the room.
Her attack stopped his assault, so Kid used the opportunity to launch his own offense. As Maggie hit the floor behind the higherling, a cracking sound, like the sound of a bone breaking, filled the air. Kid jabbed at the higherling with the dagger.
