While I was over the moon with the result, I needed to make a few things clear. I took his hand. “You do understand that I am an adult and responsible for my own bad choices, right? I don’t need you to interfere on my behalf. Dom Sawyer doesn’t extend past the bedroom.”
He turned my hand over and kissed my knuckles. “I do know that. And I promise to rein in my white knight tendencies.” Heleaned across the narrow table and kissed my forehead. “But I didn’t interfere on your behalf; I interfered on mine. I can’t abide someone harming you the way he did, so I taught him a lesson he won’t soon forget.”
I drew back, narrowing my eyes at him. “Seriously, babe. What did you do?”
“I work for some very powerful people. Anders may have also been invoked.”
“That insane friend of Beckett’s?” I hissed, looking around. “Are you trying to get me thrown into jail?”
“Nobody’s going to jail. DeWitt gets to keep his empire, minus a few illegal elements. And he will never speak to you again.”
“How did you get him to agree to that? You know he’s gonna go straight to his friends in law enforcement.”
“Oh, that’s the last thing he’ll do if he values his pinkies,” Sawyer said, his grin feral.
I sat back, realizing that Sawyer’s love for me went deeper than I could have ever imagined. I knew he’d hated everything about DeWitt and his attempt to bury me, but that he’d been willing to bring in Anders, of all people… wow.
My buzzing phone pulled me back from the shock. It was a call from Sago.
“Answer it,” Sawyer said, practically wiggling in his chair.
Who was this man?
“Hey, Sago.” I eyeballed Sawyer, shocked to see his dimple come out to play.
“Am I reading this correctly? Are we out from under the contract?”
“Yep,” I said, pulling the letter in front of me again.
“And we don’t have to perform the remaining tour dates?”
“I have friends in high places,” I said, shaking my head at my industrious boyfriend.
“Holy shit, dude. So… does that mean we’re free to do whatever we want to?”
“That’s exactly what it means. Hey, you and Robbie should come for a visit. I’ve got some ideas.”
“You’re supposed to be resting,” Sago said.
“True, but the words are flowing. There’s something about this area of Texas that inspires me,” I said, reaching for Sawyer’s hand. He gripped mine, sure and steady.
“Okay, man. Might take a little bit, but we’ll meet you down there.”
After dinner, Sawyer and I made a beeline back to the cabin, where he made love to me while being extremely bossy. It was a perfect combination of the ways in which we’d been coming together, and my heart kept beating in time with his.
This. This. This.
Later, as we snuggled in bed, I told him something I’d been keeping to myself. “I have an idea.”
“What’s that?”
“I rarely get online, but whenever I post something to social media, it goes a little crazy.”
“Okay…”
“My social media gal said that people have been asking for an update on me.”
Sawyer shifted to face me, cupping my cheek. “How do you feel about that? Do you want to give them an update?”
