"What kind of play is it?"
He shrugged. "Something about a take on a fairy tale."
I looked sideways at him. "You're interested in that?"
"Not particularly, but if you're there I'll be okay. I'm sure we'll get something out of it."
"Most of these plays are in Patois, so unless someone gave you a crash course ... "
"You're forgetting Kemar has been my friend for a while. I doubt I'll hear anything I don't understand."
"I hope you won't be asking me to translate anything in the middle of the acts."
"Stop behaving like you're a meanie," Kofi said, gently tugging the hair coming loose from my ponytail.
"So when does it start?"
"Eight."
"Okay, that gives us plenty of time."
"For what?" Kofi asked. His smile was sly, as if he knew exactly what was on my mind.
"Stuff and things," I said.
Kofi’s eyebrows climbed a bit as he said, "So it's like that, huh?"
"Yeah, it's exactly like that."
"Well, if I'm involved you better let me know early."
I cleared the intersection before turning on to the road leading to the cottage. "You didn't tell me I needed to make an appointment to be with my man."
The right side of his mouth curved as he cocked one brow. "So I'm your man then?"
With some attitude, I said, "As if you didn't know."
"I was wondering ifyouknew it."
As I pulled into the yard, I caught movement beyond him and leaned forward to wave at Kemar's mother, who was doing something in her garden.
She raised one hand, waving as we got out of the car. Her smile was bright in her dark face.
While we walked around the Mark X, she motioned to us. "Is everything okay? We hardly ever see you two."
"We are good, but busy," Kofi said.
"Okay, if you need anything let us know."
We thanked her and walked into the house that was beginning to feel like home.
When we got inside the door, I hugged Kofi around the waist. "Are you sure we need to go out tonight?"
He stroked my hair and kissed my nose. "Yes, I need a break from work and you need to not think about whatever went down at your parents' place today."
"Oh, that."
"Yes, that. How did it go?"
