“Is she right that it was the sex?”

“No! I mean sort of. But you know that moment of euphoria, when things become really clear?”

“I’m not sure I do. It’s been a while.”

“Well, I promise you that this was a breakthrough, not some reaction to endorphins.”

“I’m willing to believe you, but I’m not the one you need to convince.”

“I know. Guess I’ll just stay put. Eventually she’ll want to go see how Fudge is.”

Monty looked him up and down. “You’ll wait looking like that?”

“If I go home to change, she could slip out, check on Fudge and be back in her trailer before I can catch her.”

“You are one lovesick puppy, bro.”

“I am, but the good news is she loves me back.”

“Are you sure? Because you standing out here half-naked and her inside with the door locked doesn’t exactly telegraph Romeo and Juliet.”

“I know, but—” Tires crunched on dirt. “Oh, hell. That’s Cole’s truck rolling in.”

“Does he still like you?”

“I’m not sure.”

“FYI, this scenario won’t help your cause any.”

“But if I try to dodge him, that’ll look worse. Besides, he’s staying in her trailer, so she’ll have to open up when he arrives, right?”

“If you’re counting on slipping past her big brother, your brain’s more compromised than I thought.”

“I’ll just wait here and see how it works out.”

Monty glanced at the trailer. “Just so you know, the side window is open a crack. I’m sure she’s heard every word that’s come out of your mouth.”

“I don’t care. I hope she did. I have nothing to hide.”

“Well, I’ll leave you to it. I’m heading up to the house. We’ll all be having dinner before the Damsels claim Granny for the evening. If you get this worked out with Jordan, come join us.”

“Will do.” After Monty left, he watched as Cole dropped Mila and Claudie at the mini hacienda before driving up the hill to Rio’s chalet. At last the truck came back down and headed for the trailer.

It slowed as it approached, as if Cole had finally noticed him standing there. Pulling up beside Jordan’s truck, he shut off the engine and climbed out.

Luis shoved his hands in his pockets. “I know what this looks like."

"If you do, then please enlighten me, because I have no fudging idea what this looks like."

"Well, Jordan and I had some fun and games, and right afterward it was like a light went on in my brain. I knew Mila was right, so…” He paused, took a breath. “I told Jordan we should do what Mila said.”

“Oh, boy.”

“Yeah. She freaked out, ran to the trailer and locked herself in.”

“She outran you?”

“She had a big head start.”
