Twisting the key in the lock, I paused with Dani by my side. I hadn’t been home much because of the break in. My stomach felt queasy, and I wanted to vomit. Finally I opened the green painted door where the brassy colored numbers looked crooked.
“Would you come in for a while?”
My assistant nodded. “Of course, Silver.”
Locking the door behind us, I sat my purse and phone down on the counter.
“Why don’t you go take a hot shower, and I’ll make us some tea.”
I couldn’t help myself. Out of nowhere I hugged Dani tight.
“Thank you so much…” My voice cracked. “Just for being here. Thank you.”
“Stop! You have been like a sister to me since I got here. It’s nothing.”
“Whew! What a fucking nightmare of a night!” Fanning at my face, trying to hold back more tears.
Once I took a hot shower, I pulled on some pajamas and came back out into the living room. Just as Dani had promised she had a hot cup of tea waiting for me and she’d even made popcorn. A movie was just starting on my television. Julia Roberts was sporting a blonde wig and I smiled.
“Oh yes,” I said. “This is one of my favs.”
“I know,” Dani patted the couch beside her.
Sitting down, and easing forward, I grabbed the delicate tea cup and took sip. “This is good.”
“When I was kid,” Dani took a sip of her own. “I would wish all the time that my dad would come back for me and me and my sisters could have nights like this.”
Scooping up some of the popcorn it dawned on me, “I didn’t know you had sisters.”
Dani shook her head. “Yeah, but it’s almost like I don’t exist to them.”
“I’m sorry,” I murmured. “If something happened to Simone… My big sister is pretty much my idol.”
“She’s great isn’t she?” Dani smiled.
Getting up from the couch, I saw that Kelton’s dumb ass was still blowing up my phone. It occurred to me then that Dani had been the one to blow open this whole thing.
“Dani?” Slowly I turned to find my assistant alert.
“What?”
“How did you know about Kelton and Chyna…like you don’t know them. You hadn’t met Chyna until tonight.”
Dani nodded. “Her bracelet…she said it herself. It was one of a kind. And I remembered seeing it in that leaked sex tape. I never saw the girl’s face but her arm and that bracelet….”
As everything shifted into place, I felt nauseous. For more reason than one. Coming back over with my phone I sat down and began to scroll social media. Paul punching out Kelton was everywhere, and I just knew Jason was going to be hitting me up any minute.
Suddenly, I felt tired.
“What kind of tea was that?” I yawned loudly.
My vision even seemed to blur just a bit.
“Shhh,” I heard Dani say.
“You’re exhausted, get some rest.”
My head felt so heavy that I couldn’t fight it. I felt Dani gently laying me back and covering me up.
