“No, and you’re right. She’s more celebrity gossip and that gets viewers in seats.” Jason agreed.

“So…” Krista wanted the details just as bad as I did.

The way Jason was watching her, whatever it was being offered I was sure she was the shoe in for the position.

“The network is looking for hip and edgy. Both of you have the numbers and stats,” Jason smiled at Krista and nodded at me.

“What does that mean?” I leaned forward.

“One of you is going to take Lauren’s position.”

“Is there a pay bump?”

“There would be,” Jason nodded.

He began to go on a rant about what was going to be expected in order for either of us to move forward. My brain was too relieved at not being fire started to comprehend that if Krista did just a little bit better than me, I wouldn’t get the promotion. When the meeting was over, Krista and I walked back out and Dani was still milling around. She waved a card board box and I gave a laugh and wave.

Krista turned to me smiling tightly. “I’m going to love kicking your ass at this.”

“Excuse me?” I was a little taken aback.

“You heard me. May the best bitch win…”

The clicking of her heels announced her exit just as Dani joined me. I stared after her for a moment confused.

“What happened in there?”

We started for the elevator. My finger dashed out and hit the up button. “Lauren Vanderberg is retiring.”

“The gossip lady?”

“Yeah…” I shook my head still not understanding the interaction that had happened with Krista.

Dani’s face betrayed she was eager to hear what was happening. As we rode the elevator up, I explained more and even told her about Krista’s snotty attitude.

“Oh no she didn’t,” Dani frowned up.

“Yes, she did,” I rolled my eyes.

“Well… that’s good news, we should celebrate tonight,” Dani shimmied her shoulders.

My phone started vibrating again and it was Chyna calling this time. I told Dani to hold on for a second because I loved her idea. Dirty Mojitos and some crab rangoons seemed pretty clutch. Answering the phone, I slid into my office.

“Hey!”

“Oh my God, I finally got you on the phone,” she gave a laugh.

“Sorry, I’ve been so freaking busy,” I sat down at my desk.

“Well I’ve been trying to get up with you. Paul and I are flying out to Sacramento in a few weeks!”

My heart jumped in my chest. I missed my friends. “Really?”

“Yes.”

Taking a breath, a smile came onto my face. “I’ve missed you, so much.”

“I’ve missed you too.”
