She glanced at Oliver. She’d fed Oliver a lie about the evidence. It would go straight to Carnarvon, whether she took it or Rodney did.But if someone tried to break into the police station tonight, she’d know he was working for Stonefish.
She hoped it was quiet tonight.
As she returned for the second load, she passed Rodney, who glowered at her, but said nothing.
When they were done, and Sam had taken Oliver back to theOceanid, Rodney said, “I’ll drive this stuff straight to Carnarvon police station when we get back to shore.”
“Great idea.Want me to organise you some accommodation there?”
“Yes.I’ll be back tomorrow.”
She started the engine and cruised past Sam’s boat.Oliver was suited up for his next dive.“You’re set?”she called.
Oliver gave her a thumbs up.“We’ll call you if we have any issues.”
As much as she enjoyed hearing his voice, she hoped she didn’t hear from him.She needed a quiet night to process everything.
The sight of theOceanidmoored off the wreck site should be enough to deter would-be robbers. It might also mess with any plans Stonefish had.
Win-win really, and she didn’t have to be here.
She waved and increased her speed, travelling across the gulf, ignoring Rodney on the seat next to her.
Dot lifted her head and let the breeze wash over her face, hoping it would sweep away the muddiness and enable her to think clearly. The return trip was rough, and the boat jolted up and down waves. She glanced at Rodney.Pale face, sweat beading, death grip on the arm rests. He was going to be sick.
She reached into the side pocket and pulled out an emesis bag, thrusting it at him.He glared as he took it.No point slowing down.It would only make it worse and take longer for them to get back to the marina.
When they finally reached the channel in, she radioed the station.“On our way back.”
“Need a hand?”Colin responded.
“Negative.Boat’s fixed.”
Next to her, Rodney exhaled and handed back the unused emesis bag.She was impressed. It must have taken an inordinate amount of willpower for him not to throw up.
“Is your car down here?”
He nodded.“Just near the gate.”
Great. They wouldn’t have far to carry everything.
It took about fifteen minutes to transfer the evidence to Rodney’s hire car.
“I’ll book your accommodation when I get back to the station,” she said.“I just need to clean the boat.”
“I’ll be back tomorrow.”
Dot waited until he drove away before she spent a few minutes making sure the deck was clean and then refilling the petrol tanks. Finally she headed back to the station.
Colin met her at the door.“What happened out there?”
“Engine wouldn’t start.”
“No, on the wreck.”
She’d forgotten that was the reason she’d gone out there.“Someone stole a cannon. The team are going to overnight on Sam’s boat, so they came back to town to get what they needed while I stayed to monitor things.Did you get any information at the marina?”
He shook his head.“No one saw anything.Have you seen the wreck?”
