Rodney swore.“You disregarded my order.”

“I didn’t know it was your camera. You could have been…” she trailed off.

“Are you accusing me of working for Stonefish?”Rodney’s tone went low and menacing.

Oliver shifted forward, but Sam stretched his arm out to stop him.Annoyed, he glanced over.

Wait, Sam mouthed.

Oliver glared, but did as he asked.Stonefish.There was that name again.Sam had asked him what he knew about it.What was it?Some kind of company? His eyes widened.Maybe they were the ones behind the drugs, some kind of cartel.Which meant Sam had suspected him of being involved as well.

His skin prickled as things fell into place.

Kidnapping, murder, drugs.

Suddenly he wanted Dot out of Retribution Bay.

As fast as possible.

Chapter 12

Dot shifted, her eyes not leaving Rodney as she readied herself for an attack.Keeping her tone flat, she said, “I would be an idiot if I didn’t suspect you.Stonefish have already proven they have contacts in the police. They have a way of making certain the right people are in place where they need them.”She smiled.“But don’t consider yourself special.I don’t trust any of your team or mine.”

“It sounds as if youarestupid,” Rodney spat.“If you’ve worked with these people for years and never suspected a thing.”

She refused to be riled. He wasn’t worth it, and if what he’d said about the camera was true, then she had stuffed up.“We don’t know that Stonefish has been in operation up here for years. The first contact came at the beginning of the year.”

Rodney ground his teeth together.

This antagonism wasn’t getting them anywhere.“What do you want to do now?Leave the camera and take the evidence? If Colin knows about the camera, then chances are high the rest of the team does too.”

“I didn’t tell him.I just told him to call you back.”

Interesting.“I didn’t tell them exactly where I am,” Dot said.“We could leave the camera in place.Someone might return.”

“Your team will know as soon as we bring in the evidence.”

“So we don’t tell them.We can ship it to forensics without them knowing.”

He struggled for a moment before he said, “Fine.I’ll deal with it.”

Agreeing with her had to kill him.It would be satisfying if the case wasn’t so important.

Dot bagged the drone and some of the other smaller items, putting them into her backpack to carry. She didn’t like the idea of him having possession of all the evidence. She still didn’t trust him.

She pushed through the bushes to find Oliver and Sam on the other side. Her annoyance peaked, but at Sam’s friendly smile, she exhaled. No point wasting her energy being angry at them. They had heard everything.“Head back to the boat before Rodney sees you.”She glared to put urgency behind her soft command.

“Need a hand?”Oliver asked, his expression guilty.

“No.Go.”He was another issue she needed time to think about. She shook her head. Her focus had to be on the case.

Was Rodney telling the truth, or double-bluffing her?

The men walked with her back to the police boat.

“Rodney’s not going to kill you?”Oliver asked.

“Not today.”She refused to feel guilty about interrupting his trap.If he’d been honest in the first place, this wouldn’t have happened.Leaving so much evidence unprocessed made no sense.Rodney could have set up the camera, but cleared the hideout and then he would have caught the culprit on film, but also had the evidence.
