“Right back at you.”

She hung up and went to find Sam. He was in the kitchen looking through her fridge. “You were quick,” he said. “I thought you’d chat for a while.”

“I told her I’d call her later.”

“I was going to make pancakes, but you don’t appear to have any decent toppings.”

“It’s so I can resist making them all the time.”

“Then we’ll have to have museli,” he said.

She wasn’t hungry right now. Seeing the handsome naked man in her kitchen made her ravenous for something else.

“How about we shower first?” she suggested.

Water, soap, and close confines seemed like the perfect remedy.

He grinned. “Lead the way.”

Much later, they finally sat at her kitchen bench to have breakfast. It was a lovely day outside and she wished she’d bought some outdoor furniture so they could sit in her backyard while they ate.

Her phone rang. It was Dot. “How did it go?” Penelope asked, putting the call on speaker.

“Both issues have been dealt with.”

Penelope pulled a face. “Was it another weapons cache on the island?”

“I can’t tell you.”

Not helpful. “Dot, I need to know how much danger I’m in. What should I do if I discover any more?”

“Call the police.”

So it can’t have been someone burying their rubbish. What else had Dot found? “Do you think they’ll be back?”

“Possibly. You see anything odd, you call us. Do not investigate on your own. I’ll tell the Stokes and Sam the same.”

“Already know,” Sam said.

Silence for a moment. “Right,” Dot sounded resigned. “Try to keep each other out of trouble.”

“We’ll be careful, Dot,” Sam promised.

“That’s not a promise to stay out of trouble.”

Sam smiled. “Trouble seems to be attracted to us.”

“I’ll say.” She sighed. “Penelope, I’m having a small get together for my birthday tomorrow night. Nothing special, just dinner at the brewery if you want to come.”

Penelope grinned. “Thanks. I’d love to. What time?”

“Six-thirty. Sam, I’d invite you, but it’s a girls’ night.”

“I look good in a dress,” Sam joked.

Dot laughed. “I’d like to see that someday.”
