He jolted. “You think he’s going to come after us?”

“I don’t know what he’ll do, but no going off alone without telling someone where you’re going and how long you’ll be.”

“I won’t. Have you identified the guy yet?”

“No. He hid his face too well, but we’re checking with the AFP and Interpol as well.” She raised her eyebrows and he nodded. He got her meaning.

“Report anything that feels off, no matter how small,” she continued.

“I will. Might help if you chat to Declan, get him to keep Georgie in the office if he can.”

“I’ll apprise him of the situation. His people will need to be on the lookout as well.”

“Thanks, Nhiari.” He hugged her.

“Just keep out of trouble.” She climbed into the police car and she and Dot drove away.

Matt moved over to Georgie. “You ready to go?”

She nodded.

“You’re not staying for dinner?” Darcy asked.

Matt smiled. “I owe Georgie a date. Do you think fish and chips is fancy enough?”

The others laughed, but Georgie said, “That sounds perfect.”

They said their goodbyes, and then he followed Georgie into town. When they arrived at her place, he went straight through to put his bag in Georgie’s bedroom, checking the other rooms as he went.

“Everything all right?” Georgie asked.

“Just checking for surprises,” he said.

She bit her nail and he went over to her, taking her hands in his. “I’m probably being overly cautious.”

“Did Nhiari tell you to be?”

He nodded.

“I hate this. I hate that these people seem to have a thing for the Ridge, and we get blamed for getting in the way when it’s our place.”

“It sucks,” Matt agreed. “Let’s go pick up dinner and then we can watch a movie.”

“The brewery delivers pizza.”

“Perfect. What do you want?”

While they waited for their order, they sat on the couch and flicked through Georgie’s subscription service.

“Did Darcy talk to you about me?” Georgie asked.

“Yeah, he told me it was fine to work fewer hours if I wanted to stay with you.”

“Do you want to stay?” She glanced at the ground. “I mean, I know you said you wanted to move in, but is it just because of the danger?”

He placed the TV remote on the table and took her hand. “It’s a weird situation, but I want to stay… for as long as you’ll have me.”

“That might be a while.”
