She shrugged as she wrapped the towel tightly around her torso. “Everything about the situation sucks.”

He couldn’t stand to see her so upset. “I want to move in with you,” he blurted. “At least until this guy is caught.”

“All right.”

Matt closed his mouth on his argument, surprised. “I thought you might be harder to convince.”

Her smile was a little sad. “I’ve wanted to live with you for years,” she said. “And right now, I’m not foolish enough to want to be contrary about the reason.”

Good. It would be a good way to test living together, and hopefully Nhiari and Dot would have an update when they arrived.

He didn’t want to be in limbo for long.

It was late afternoon before Dot and Nhiari dropped in to get their statements. They looked exhausted and sweaty. Amy poured them both a glass of iced water and Matt pulled out a seat for his sister.

Nhiari raised an eyebrow but sat.

“What did you find?” Brandon asked.

“No sign of the dinghy,” Dot said. “He must have somewhere to hide it because my guy flew over the area for more than an hour without spotting anything.”

The dinghy couldn’t have gone far before the plane was airborne which meant the guy knew the area well. Damn it.

“He’s dangerous, so if you see anyone even remotely resembling him, you call it in. Do not approach him.” Nhiari looked pointedly at Brandon.

“He won’t,” Amy said, squeezing Brandon’s hand. He sighed and nodded.

“Declan said animal smuggling doesn’t carry a heavy sentence,” Georgie said. “Why kill everyone?”

Dot shook her head. “Might be animal smuggling is only one of their activities or maybe one of them knew too much.”

Matt studied her, but aside from the exhaustion both officers showed, he’d never guess her brother had just been murdered. She was one tough cookie.

“We need to speak with you and Matt again,” Dot continued. “Review your statements.”

“Use the lounge room,” Brandon said.

While Georgie went with Dot and Nhiari, Matt went back to his room to pack some things. He glanced around the room. Pretty much everything would fit in a single duffle bag. How sad was that?

With a sigh, he threw clothes, toiletries and his laptop in and lifted the bag over his shoulder.

He should have more to show for his life.

Matt returned to the house and when it was his turn, he rehashed what had happened.

“Be on your guard,” Dot said as they walked back into the kitchen.

“We will be.” Darcy placed his arms around Lara and Faith.

“Good. We’ve got to go.” Dot headed straight outside and Nhiari took Matt aside. “Maybe you should stay in the house for a while.”

It wasn’t often Nhiari looked so concerned. He felt a punch of worry. “I’ll be staying in town with Georgie.”

“What’s the security at her place like?”

“Locks are solid.” He and Darcy had made sure of it when she’d moved in.

“Might be worth installing a couple of cameras just in case.”
