My eyes burn as we come down from our high. But I fight it back, not wanting to cry in front of him right now.

But I can’t hide anything from him, the same way he can’t from me.

“What’s wrong?” He wipes himself up without looking, his eyes glued to mine, concern between his eyebrows.

I chuckle softly, my heart bursting with affection and warmth. “Nothing’s wrong. That was … perfect.”

He grabs my wrist and pulls me down in bed beside him, still analyzing my face. “So, good tears then?”

I nod, unable to fight my smile or the wetness forming in my eyes. “Very good tears.”

He kisses my forehead and wraps his arms around me. “The only kind I’m ever going to cause you.”

To most girls, that would probably sound like a line, but I know that he’s genuine and that it’s true. We might not have a path smoothly laid out before us all the time, but I know that we’ll be able to navigate anything together.

CHAPTER 23

LAINEY

I’m not sure how,but a piece of my soul healed last night with Jensen, and I’m walking with a pep in my step as I stride into The Little Dove to meet Morgan for a breakfast date.

She’s wearing a cute sweater and leggings, sitting at a table near the back of the shop. “Hey!”

“Hi!” I greet her back as I sit down in the seat across from her.

“I already ordered our usuals. Should be out soon.” She types something into her phone before putting it face down, giving me all of her attention. “You seem awfully smiley this morning.”

I can’t hide my smile as I twirl my thumbs. “Yeah. Jensen and I are officially together.”

She squeals, bouncing her feet under the table, “Ahh! I knew it! I’m so happy for you guys!”

Beaming, I shimmy my vest off and rest it on the chair. “Thank you. It’s been a long time coming.”

One of the baristas strides over to our table, two drinks in hand, and she sets them down for us. “Food will be right out.”

Morgan thanks her, and I smile politely.

“Question,” I ask Morgan, spinning the to-go coffee cup in my hand, “how many milligrams of caffeine are in this?”

From what I read, it’s recommended for pregnant women to drink two hundred milligrams or less daily.

“About a hundred. The frappes are pretty low, honestly, unless you were to order extra shots of espresso.” She pauses. “Are you working on your tolerance?”

I haven’t told my parents, who are going to be over the moon when they find out, that I’m pregnant. Yet, for some reason, telling Morgan feels like the most natural thing in the world. She’s my closest friend right now, and telling someone feelsreal.

“Not exactly,” I murmur before taking a quick sip. “I, uhh … I’m pregnant.”

Her eyes widen, and mouth falls open with a giant smile. “Are you serious? Oh my God! Congrats!”

I nod, a haunting chuckle leaving my lips. “There’s only one annoying piece of it all. It’s Cole’s.”

She sucks in a breath. “Oh, well, does he know? Does Jensen know?”

“Jensen knows.” My cheeks warm. “He’s excited.”

“That doesn’t surprise me. He’s so good with kids.” She bites her bottom lip in thought as she pauses. “So, you haven’t dealt with Cole?”

I groan, “Not yet. But we will.”
