“Hmm, just that?” His brow rises. “I seem to recall you going to the music practice when Zack could have driven Cara and you dropping one hundred and fifty thousand to make her stay.”
“Your point?”
“You like Ms K, and quite frankly, I think she’s very pretty.” My scowl is immediate. “Relax, boss, just letting you know that moving in with her is a smart move.” I relax my tightening jaw.
“Get that mattress, asap.”
“On it, boss”
He leaves and I start to concentrate on the work before me. I should go to my unit today and sleep on a better mattress. I’ll be back at Anu’s apartment on Saturday.
Chapter 24
Anu-Ms K
I arrive at the restaurant for my dad’s birthday party with my brother. It feels good to be home. I’ve missed them. Dad’s friends and a few of my mom’s friends are all here to celebrate with dad. Even Teni’s parents are here, which surprised me after all that has transpired with our families. I greeted them politely and moved on. I take my sit next to Michael, my date, another one of my dad’s friends’ son. I used to crush on Michael with all his rugby-built body. Now after meeting Daniel. I realize that, I feel nothing for Michael. If anything, I’m looking forward to going back to Chicago and living with my sexy roommate.
Michael and I chatted a bit. I tell him that I have a boyfriend, he feigned sadness like he lost a good one, but I know that’s not true. I already heard from a friend that he’s seeing someone but probably thought he and I could hook up and we would do some long-distance dating, nope.
Not doing that again. I take pictures with my dad and brother. Dad does look happy, much better than the last two years since my mom passed. It was with both relief and sadness that shepassed. She never fully recovered from our rainy accident. We danced all night and had lots of laughs. I rode with Dad on our drive home, I had to bring Daniel up.
“Dad, I have boyfriend”
“Anyone I know?”
I shake my head
“I don’t like that, how will I know he will be good to you?”
“Dad, I think I’m old enough to decide if he’s good to me or not. Remember you thought Teni would be good because he was your friend’s son, but he wasn’t, if anything he was worse” He looks sad but I know this is my opportunity to get my point across.
“I’m sorry about that Anu mi but you can’t blame me for worrying about my daughter.”
“I don’t blame you, but can you give me and Daniel a chance, so that means no unexpected dates” he frowns, I nudge him with my shoulder.
“Okay but you must promise to break it off if he’s not good for you and I can find you a husband.”
“Okay daddy.” I smile and kiss his cheek.
“What does your boyfriend do?”
“He’s a lawyer.”
" I don't like lawyers but for now, I'll accept and I'll have to look into him at some point” he says with a warning look
“Maybe in the future if we start getting serious” he nods.
“Does he know about your disease?”
“Yes, he’s fully aware.”
“That’s good that he knows.”
I smile, deep down, I doubt Daniel knows what a crisis looks like for a sickle cell patient but I’m not trying to marry him or anyone so it should be okay.
We get home and my dad and brother go to bed. I find myself awake and thinking of Daniel. I decide to call him.
