Their elderly audience didn’t bat an eyelash.
Thankfully, it wasn’t a body part delivery. They found Gabe, Wander, and Riley’s nieces on the front porch. Nick shoved the gun back into his waistband.
“Trick or treat,” the girls sang in unison. River and Rain were both dressed as Wonder Woman. Janet wore a long skirt, glasses, and a bun. Gabe and Wander were dressed as a gender-bending Sonny and Cher.
Riley groaned. “Crap! I forgot the candy. I wonder if I can get some delivered in time?”
“Hey, guys. Who wants some nice canned goods?” Nick offered.
“Me!” Janet said, scampering past him into the house.
“Who is she supposed to be?” Riley asked, hooking her thumb in Janet’s direction.
“Marie Curie, the scientist who discovered radium,” Gabe answered. He tossed his long, black Cher hair over his shoulder.
“Raphael is picking up the girls to take them trick-or-treating, so we thought we’d help you two with trick or treat night,” Wander said, stepping inside and pressing a kiss to Riley’s cheek. Her fake mustache tickled, and it smelled like eucalyptus. She was wearing a paisley shirt under a suede vest plus bell bottoms.
“Nice mustache,” Riley said.
Wander grinned. “Thanks. I soaked it in essential oils so I didn’t have to wear nose plugs.”
“This is really nice of you guys, but we’re kind of in the middle of something,” Riley said.
“Then we’ll handle the trick-or-treaters, and you can focus on whatever you need to do,” her sister said.
“Thank you. And good luck finding food to give out. Someone ate all the gummy worms,” Riley said, pointing at Nick.
The gummy-worm thief closed the door only to have it open itself.
A freshly showered Kellen strolled inside in jeans and a sweater. Riley couldn’t remember ever seeing him in casual clothes before. “They’re still watching the house from next door,” he reported. “I couldn’t get a good look at who it is.”
“Look at you dressing up as a real boy,” Jasmine said.
“I see a few hours of sleep didn’t make you any less of a pain in my ass,” Kellen observed.
Brian and Josie entered from Brian’s office.
Nick shut the door again. “Guess it’s time to get to work.”
“You’re feeding us, right?” Josie demanded.
“I’ll order pizza,” Riley promised.
“Green peppers and black olives,” her friend said.
“Meat lovers,” Nick and Kellen said together.
“Mushroom and spinach for us, please,” Wander said.
Lily poked her head out of the kitchen door. “Extra sausage on mine. Make it a sausage fest!”
Mr. Willicott’s head appeared above Lily’s. He held up a sign that saidPepperoni.
“Did he just make that sign, or did he actually come over here with a pepperoni sign on the off-chance someone was buying pizza?” Nick asked.
Riley sighed. “We’ll probably never know.”
“I’ll get the briefing set up in the dining room. There’s more places to sit, and it’s farther away from whatever the hell your weirdos are doing in the kitchen.”
