“You don’t seem to be having that issue.”

Maia chuckled. “As bad as it sounds, I’m used to being shot at. It kinda comes with the territory. But it’s not for everyone, I get that. It’s why I’ve been single for a very long time.”

“Men are stupid.”

Maia laughed. “I can’t disagree with you there. If I was willing to settle, to give up a part of me, I could have been married a long time ago. I almost did. Then I thought…how happy would I be if I gave up my career for him?”

“A man who really loves you would never ask you to give up your soul to make himself feel like a man.” I told her. “Arealman would never ask you to give up your soul to make him feel like a man. You made the right decision.”

“I know.” She pulled into Tarek’s driveway and turned off the ignition. “Sometimes when the loneliness becomes too much—I wonder.”

“Listen, I’ve met the most amazing guys in the Protectors—Tarek’s friends.” I giggled. “I’m pretty sure if I asked, they could point me in the direction of a good one.”

Maia laughed. “Absolutely not. Besides, I’m pretty sure they are all with someone.”

“It’s worth a try.” I pointed out. “I mean, if Kujo wasn’t with someone—or Swede—lord have mercy.”

“Keep it in your panties, Dirty Harriette.” Maia giggled. “We need to behave.”

“Oh boo—”

The front door opened, and Tarek and Malik stepped out. They stood akimbo, staring at the jeep and I knew our pause in the vehicle had gotten us in trouble.

“Oh, I think we’re about to get a spanking.” Maia teased while unclipping her seatbelt.

“Oh gawd, I hope so.” I muttered.

Maia laughed out loud and pushed her door open.

“Shit, did I say that out loud?” I whispered.

“Yup!”

My cheeks heated.

Inside, Malik found us something to eat while we told Tarek what had happened. Maia hugged me and had to leave to fill out reports of the incident. I walked her to the door and when we stepped outside, I pulled the box from my pocket and extended it to her.

“I can’t.” She shook her head. “It’s too much.”

“You don’t know what it is,” I said. “Please, it would mean the world to me if you took it. Even if you never wear it.”

“Ellie…”

“My own friends wouldn’t have done what you’ve done for me.” I told her. “Thank you seems so—not enough.”

“Ellie, you’re friends with Tarek…”

“No, not really.”

She chuckled. “You know what I mean.”

“Please.”

Maia sighed but accepted the box and opened it. “This is lovely. Thank you.”

I nodded. “Be careful.”

“I will.” Maia touched my cheek then climbed into her truck. “You know Tarek is afraid for you?”
