“I know that too.”
I hung my head, but he tipped my chin then pressed his stethoscope to my chest.
“I won’t screw this up again,” I said.
“Ellie.” Malik exhaled long and hard. “You have to be quiet so I can hear your heart.”
“My heart doesn’t matter.” I told him, lifting my chin defiantly. “I need you to know what I’m feeling. For a brief second today I thought he was gone. And my world ended. It was horrifying. I need you to understand that losing Tarek will kill me. I don’t want to go.”
“And who said you had to go?”
“You. Your parents. I’m pretty sure Jesse hates me too.”
“No one hates you, Ellie.” Malik explained. “We were angry and disappointed. Tarek expected better from you because he’s always seen something in you the rest of us didn’t. And even though I’m a little hesitant to welcome you into our family because that fear you’ll hurt him is still there, Cobra loves you.”
“He said that?”
“He doesn’t have to say it.” Malik paused, pressed the instrument to my chest again before stringing it around his neck. “The way he panicked when he realized you weren’t with him. The way he looked for you—whispered your name in his sleep…Just—don’t hurt him again, okay? His heart won’t be able to stand it.”
I nodded.
“Come.” Malik stood. “I’ll take you to Cobra.”
I followed eagerly. Tarek was sitting up in bed eating something from a bowl. When he saw me, he set the food down and opened his arms to me. I ran into them and he grunted.
“Sorry.” I told him.
“Damn, you feel good.” Tarek told me. “This is where you belong, Ellie. Right here, in my arms.”
“The feelings are mutual.” I managed.
“Where are the other two?” Malik asked.
“Grim took Maia home so she could get some rest but I’m pretty sure they’re heading for the scotch.” Tarek told us. “I’ll see them tomorrow after they sleep it off.”
Malik nodded. “I’ll give you two some privacy. But you do know I have to call mom, dad and Jesse.”
“Seriously?” I asked.
“I’m not trying to get disowned.” Malik replied as he left the room.
Tarek groaned.
I climbed onto the bed and cuddled into his good side. “I can’t wait to get out of here—I need some time alone with you.”
“Really? What exactly do you have in mind?” Tarek asked, his voice dropping a sexy octave.
“I want to surprise you with lingerie and soft music…” I teased. “Maybe I could do a little dance for you. I’ve always wanted to dance for you.”
Tarek kissed my head. “I like the way you think.”
“But I’m afraid I have to leave you for a bit.”
“Why?”
“I need to have a talk with my father,” I replied.
Tarek tightened his arm around me.
