Jacob looked at Berni. “You can.”
Berni nodded. “When you and my brother fought the wolves the other day, did you fight one Frank didn’t?”
Jacob nodded. “Yeah, the shorter one. Why?”
“Emory thinks his claws might have been poisoned.”
Jacob frowned. “But he didn’t slash my stomach, it was the large one that did that.”
“If silver was in your system already, it might have affected your wound. It’s worth Robbie checking just in case,” Berni said.
“I get that,” Jacob replied but then paused. “You told Joe I was part of your pack. Are you sure you want me here?”
Berni nodded. “I do. If you don’t mind me saying, you need a gentle guiding hand.”
Jacob sighed. “Yeah, you’re probably right. Joe and I need to register for a new college. I promised my mum I’d finish all my studies and Joe promised his parents before he left.”
“We have a pack college here, you can all transfer there if you want. Now, I wanted to ask you, when you snooped on your father’s secret conversations, did you happen to hear any names?”
“I've been wracking my brains, and didn’t want to send you on a wild goose chase, but I heard him mention the name Mortimer. I don’t know if that was a first or last name, or even if that was who he was talking to.”
“Thank you. I can look into that. You have access to your father’s bank accounts. Would you be able to recognise any strange payments?”
“l honestly don’t know. I mean, I don’t know what he had coming in or going out. I can look and try and make an educated guess. I can’t promise I’ll be right, though.”
“That doesn’t matter, if you identify something, great, if not, never mind.”
“I’ll look in a bit for you.”
“Thank you.”
Jacob nodded, but before he could say anything else, Finn walked in.
“Hey,” he said, walking over to the bed.
“Welcome back. Did Robbie give you the medication?” Berni asked.
Finn nodded, and, after putting the bag he was carrying on the side of the bed, pulled out two syringes. “He did, a new antibiotic and a different pain killer. He showed me what to do in case Fran was sleeping. Jacob, do you trust me?”
Jacob nodded. “Sure, shoot me up.”
Finn and Berni laughed and Finn walked over to the other side of the bed.
“I need to inject them both into your bag and they should get to work quickly,” Finn said, injecting first one syringe and then the other. “The pain meds should knock you out pretty quickly and this antibiotic should work alongside the other one.”
Berni stood up. “Let me help you get settled.” He helped Jacob lie down and get comfy.
“What about the accounts?” Jacob asked sleepily.
“Check when you wake up.”
Jacob nodded and fell asleep.
“I’ll stay here if there are things you need to do,” Finn offered.
“Thanks, I’ll be back later to check on you both.”
“No rush. I’ve got my e-reader in my bag, I can read that.”
