Her stomach dropped. This was it. She was totally dying.
He took her hands and looked deep into her eyes. Maybe it would be romantic if it weren’t so terrifying. “They ran the tests again. The anomaly was still there.”
Dizzie squeezed his hand. “What did they find? Tell me! I can take it.”
“Your blood test indicated a match for the Tremaine family.”
She heard the words but had no idea what they meant. “Portia bled on me? That’s gross, but I don’t see why it’s a big deal.”
He shook his head. “No. You’ve got Tremaine DNA. You’re related to Portia. And her father. You’re a Tremaine.”
Her head swam. Killian wasn’t making sense. “The second test showed that it was a mistake?” Did he hear the hope in her voice?
“No, Dizzie. It confirmed that you’re a Tremaine.”
Horror swamped her. She tugged her hand free and wrapped both arms around her middle to keep from shattering. Her voice was shrill. “That can’t be right. It’s a mistake. Make them run the test again.”
“It’s not a mistake, Dizzie.” His voice was soothing.
“I don’t want to be a Tremaine.” The childish words tumbled out, but that didn’t make them any less true. How could she be related to the very people she hated?
His smile was gentle. “You don’t have a choice.”
They’d taken everything from her, she wouldn’t let them take her identity too. “My name is Dizzie. I’m a courier for the Tremaine Corporation.”
“Your name is Dizzie. I’m not sure how, but you’re also a member of the Tremaine family.”
This couldn’t be happening. The nightmare would end if she woke up. Dizzie pinched her left arm and gasped when her nails drew blood.
It was true. Her stomach churned.
The Tremaine Corporation already owned her. Being part of the family was another chain. Another way to keep her from her freedom.
He brushed his hand over her forehead. She leaned into his touch. A little.
“Are you okay?”
She didn’t have enough left in her for a laugh. “No. Not really.”
He wrapped her in his arms. “Do you want me to call the nurse?”
“No. Can you hand me that glass of water?” He held the glass while she sipped and considered this new information. “Do they know?”
He understood she was talking about the Tremaines. “I don’t know. I wouldn’t be surprised if the hospital alerted them.”
“Are you going to tell them?” Maybe they would never know. She wished she could forget.
He ran his hand over his face. “We’ll deal with that when you’re feeling better.”
“Sure.” Her life was slipping further out of her control and she hated it. She wasn’t strong enough to fight about this now. Clothed in a hospital gown, reeling from learning her life was a lie, she wasn’t at the top of her game.
“Are you in pain? Do you want me to get the nurse?”
Dizzie almost said no. Then again, it was the perfect excuse to get him to leave her alone.
She didn’t know how to deal with Killian right now. The day had started so well, waking in his arms. Six missing hours later and her life was over.
That caused a twinge in her chest on the left side. That was new. Probably a carryover from the accident. “Yeah,” she said. “My head and chest hurt. Right here.” She rubbed her chest right over her heart.
