Killian looked at her, a question in his eyes. She turned away, unwilling to put a name to the emotion there.

“I’ll get her.” He was quiet for a moment.

Uncomfortable silence fell over the room, broken only by the hums and beeps of the machines. Dizzie closed her eyes.

He stood at her side. She couldn’t see him, but she felt his presence.

He cleared his throat, but said nothing.

Dizzie held herself still, barely daring to breathe.

His footsteps and the door shutting were the only sounds that broke the steady rhythm of the beeping of her broken heart.

Chapter38

The nurse enteredDizzie’s room. He wanted to follow but didn’t think he’d be welcome. He settled for pacing up and down the hallway.

Dizzie was okay. That was all that mattered. The doctors couldn’t tell him much, but they’d assured him she would be okay. As a Tremaine—how the hell was that possible?—she’d receive the best possible care.

Those tests results… Killian still couldn’t wrap his head around them.

When he’d called Tremaine Medical Services, he’d intended to use the power of his name to protect her, although he hadn’t been 100 percent sure that it would be enough to keep her safe.

Now… He shook his head. Now she was somehow related to one of the most powerful families in the world. And she wasn’t happy about it.

Neither Killian nor the medic had believed it when Dizzie had triggered the top-level protocol in the ambulance. The second, more comprehensive test at the hospital had confirmed the relationship.

Ever since, Killian had expected someone from Tremaine to show up. What would it mean for Dizzie? Would they welcome her? Or arrest her?

A commotion in the hallway brought Killian back to the present.

“Where is she? I want to see the woman who killed my husband!”

Portia.

He had no idea what he was going to tell her.

She stormed down the hallway, flanked by a team of security guards.

Fuck. Portia wouldn’t welcome a new sister.

If Dizzie left the hospital with Portia, he’d never see her again. He refused to let that happen.

Killian stepped in front of Dizzie’s door and into Portia’s path.

“Why am I not surprised you’re here?” She spat out the words.

“You can’t do this, Portia.” Killian tried reason first. He kept his voice soft and split his attention between her and the guards. He couldn’t stop four highly trained men, but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t try.

Anything to protect Dizzie.

“Do what? Have her arrested for murdering my husband? You forget, Killian, corporations police their own.” She looked him dead in the eye. “You protected her, you bastard. Be glad I’m not here for you too!”

She hadn’t forgiven him for putting Dizzie first at his house. Maybe she never would. He wasn’t sure he’d survive losing both Tommy and Portia, but he wouldn’t trade one Tremaine sister for the other.

“She didn’t kill Tommy. Help us figure out who actually sent the bomb.”

She moved until she was directly in front of him. A wave of her hand and her guards fanned out around her. “You and the courier?”
