“Why not?”
“Why—”
She stared at his mouth, his lips quirking up at the
corners, and she realized he waslaughingat her. On
the inside. Trying very hard not to laugh on the outside.

“Oh!” She lunged and punched him, her fist connecting with his shoulder. He didn’t flinch, didn’t even
roll with it, just sat there and took it.
Rubbing her fist, she glared at him.
“You’re gorgeous when you’re hitting things, Roxy
Tam,” he murmured, and moved so fast she didn’t even
have time to blink.
He took her down, flat on her back, pinning her
with his weight.
“So that whole ‘you are mine’ speech was just teasing? Right?” She didn’t know what she wanted him to
say. She only knew she held her breath, waiting.
He said nothing, just stared down at her, gray eyes
glittering with that same intense light. It unnerved her.
Attracted her. Drew her in and frightened her all at
once.
Gently, so gently, he kissed her, his mouth warm and
open, his tongue teasing, luring, until she wrapped her
arms around his neck and kissed him back.
Tearing her mouth from his, she gasped for air,
fought for lucidity. She should let it go, should just enjoy the moment and the sex and not look for anything
else. Life had taught her not to look for anything else.
But a part of her wanted to know, neededto know.
“You didn’t answer me.”
“Because I never lie.”
