SINS OF THE HEART

A shudder chased up her spine. Fear. She didn’t

want to understand her actions, didn’t want to acknowledge any underlying emotion.

But apparently, he had no such qualms.

“You are mine, Roxy Tam. Mine to hold. Mine to

keep. Mine to protect.” His gray eyes glittered with a

feral light, wild, untamed. A little frightening. “You are

mine.”

Her heart twisted, then slammed against her ribs, too

hard, too fast. She jerked away from him and skittered

on all fours to the farthest corner of the bed. There, she

held herself poised, ready to run. Maybe ready to fight.

She wasn’t sure, wouldn’t be sure unless he tried to

touch her.

He seemed to understand that, because he stayed

exactly where he was, watching her with eyes that were

mercury bright. He made no move toward her. But he

wanted to. She could read it in the way he balled his

hands into fists and the tense lines that bracketed his

mouth.

“I belong to no one but myself.” She kept the words

toneless, cool. But inside, she was a bubbling cauldron.

What exactly was he saying? What claim was he

making on her?

She felt breathless, her heart too tight, her pulse racing uncomfortably fast. “You can’t just grab me by the

hair, club me over the head and drag me into your

cave—”
