I had to swallow against the ball of emotion lodged in my throat.
I wanted to pretend this was inevitable, him and me falling back into one another, the way it felt inevitable the first time… but it wasn’t.
This time around, I knew exactly how much it would hurt if I let myself sink into him and things didn’t work out.
But I took a deep breath and swan-dived anyway.
“And what if I say I want to stay in O’Leary and live on this mountain?” I whispered.
“Then I would say… welcome home, my love.”
And that was when my awkward ass burst into tears and I buried my head in his chest.
