I looked at Megan again.
Talk about clueless.
When Austin came with me to look at the house I now lived in, I’d sort of hinted around that I was interested in his sister. I’d half expected him to go all Hulk smash about the idea, but he hadn’t. He’d basically given his blessing.
And I’d been too chicken to do anything more about it.
“Do you have the rings?”
At Pastor Chaz’s words, Austin turned to me with his hand out. I blinked back into focus and reached into my pocket for the slim platinum band he’d given me before this all started. Where was it?
I swallowed the panic rising in my throat and reached into the other pocket.
Austin’s head tipped to the side and his eyebrows drew together.
My fingers touched metal. Thank You, Jesus. I gave him a toothy grin when I put the ring into his hand.
Austin shook his head slightly and turned back to Kayla. “With this ring…”
I shifted my gaze back to Megan. She was looking at me, laughter dancing in her eyes. Something of how I felt about her must have shown, because she sobered and studied me intently for five glorious heartbeats.
Then she turned her attention back to her brother and his new wife.
I wasn’t jealous. Exactly.
When Pastor Chaz introduced Austin and Kayla as husband and wife, I waited, palms sweaty, for them to start back up the aisle. When they reached the halfway point, I stepped forward to offer my elbow to Megan.
She looked at me—almost as if she was seeing me differently—then slipped her hand through my arm.
We walked down the steps of the platform and started up the aisle, and I realized I would trade everything I had for this moment to go on forever.
Maybe it could.
If I could work up the nerve to ask my best friend’s little sister on a date.
