Stupid girls, I’m not going to tell them anything.

“Have they kissed?” Melissa laughs.

“Or gone to second base?” Chanel asks.

“I know someone who’s gone to second base with Ford?” Mellissa looks right at me as she says this and winks.

Chanel and Bree look at each other and say, “Was it you?”

“Yes,” they say together and laugh.

June scoots closer to me, resting her chin on my shoulder. I can tell she wants to get up and leave, but she’s scared they’ll single her out if she does.

“There’s only one more base left. Who here has been to third base?” Melissa arches an eyebrow, glancing at everyone.

“Have you and Ford made it to third base?” Bree tilts her head, giving me a mean smile.

I roll my eyes. I’m not going to stoop to her level.

“Well, I don’t want to brag about me and Ford, but...” Chanel puts a hand on her chest.

“Me, either.” Bree hits her hands against her chest.

I burst out laughing. I’m done. I tried. I failed. And now I’m leaving. I stand up, grabbing June’s hand. Leah and Aubrey stand up too. “Next, you’re going to tell us Ford got you pregnant. New flash Bree, you can’t get knocked up from having a penis in your mouth.” I keep walking, and I don’t stop until I get down to Ford’s jet ski. I’m laughing on the outside, but on the inside, I’m furious. I sit down on the edge of the grass. June sits next to me, and Leah sits on the other side. Aubrey sits in front of me in the water.

“I’m sorry. I thought Chanel was nice. I didn’t know she was friends with Bree and Alison.”

I wrap my arm around June, trying to comfort her. “It’s okay. You were trying to be nice to the new girl.”

“I can’t believe they dared to say what they did,” Aubrey says.

“They were saying all those things because they wanted to know if Ford and I have rounded all the bases, and they wanted me to know what they had done with him. But he’d already told me.”

“You did?” Leah asks.

I nod. “Ford and I talked about it.”

“I can’t believe Ford’s had sex with Bree Chandler.” Aubrey makes a disgusted face.

I scoff. “He hasn’t.”

“Are you sure? I’ve heard her say she slept with him after junior prom last year,” Leah says.

“She told everyone that. I asked Ford, and he said he didn’t have sex, and I believe him.”

I glance back at the guys. They’re still playing volleyball. They’ve been oblivious to what’s been going on. Bree and her little gang have moved over to the grass to watch the game. “I want to go home,” June says.

“Did you drive here?” I ask, rubbing a hand down her back.

“No, Tyler picked me up.”

I pull my phone from the pocket in my sundress and send a text to Ford.June wants to go home.

30. Paired Off

My phone chimes with a text from Hannah. “Time out,” I call as the volleyball lands at my feet. I read her text and look up at the porch, but she’s not there anymore. So I search around the yard until I find her sitting on the beach. June is tucked into her side. I walk up to Tyler. “Hey Hannah, just sent me a text. Something’s going on with the girls. She says June wants to go home.” I hand him my home so he can see the text.

“Is everything okay?” Jack asks me.
