A couple of minutes later, June comes down with Tyler. He’s carrying our bowl of trail mix, and June has a plate of snickerdoodles and our lemonades in her hands. They set everything down on the coffee table. Tyler sits at the other end of the sofa, and June sits on the floor next to him. Ford looks over at Jack, and they pause the game again.

Jack gets up and goes over to the mini-fridge behind the bar. “Who wants water?”

“Me,” Ford says, raising his hand. A water bottle comes flying, and Ford catches it one-handed.

“Me too.” Tyler holds his hands out, and another water bottle sails through the air.

“Clark? June?” Jack asks.

“No, thank you,” June replies.

“I’m good. Thanks though,” I say.

Ford reaches over, grabbing two cookies. I reach my hand out for one, but he holds it away from me with a smile. “Did you want one of my cookies?”

I tilt my head with a smile. “Yes, please.” He licks both sides of the cookie and holds it out for me. “Are you serious?”

“Like a stroke.”

“What?” I ask, confused. “I don’t get it.”

“You know, because a stroke is a serious condition, and someone could die from it.”

“Dude, my grandma died of a stroke,” Tyler says, a frown on his face.

“Oh, I’m so sorry,” June says.

“Bro, sorry to hear that. When did your gramps die?” Jack asks, looking confused.

“Me too.” I thump Ford’s chest when he doesn’t say anything.

Ford scrunches his forehead and says, “T. I’ve met both of your grandpas. They come to our games.”

“Oh, that’s right, you have.” Tyler breaks out into a smile and laughs.

I pull the cookie Ford didn’t lick out of his hand and take a bite.

“Hey.” Ford pouts, but he takes a bite of the other cookie.

“That’s what you get for such a terrible sarcastic comment.” I reach in, kissing him on the cheek.

“That makes up for it. Kind of.” Ford smiles.

I just shake my head. “Hey Jack, have you always played cornerback on defense?”

Jack’s about to take a bite of his cookie but stops. “Did Ford tell you I play cornerback?”

“No.” I smirk.

“It must say that on the roster.” He comes back with.

“Nope.” I raise my eyebrows, and my smile gets bigger.

“Tyler plays running back and wide receiver on offense and safety on defense. Coach Anderson called a lot of plays in the formation, and I didn’t get to watch all the plays, but I think most of the running plays were blasts or drives. I’m still not sure what the difference is. Oh, and Ty runs a perfect post corner pass.”

Jack’s mouth drops open.

“Are you okay, Slick? You’re not having a stroke, are you?”
