I pick up my drink and take a long sip.“Okay,” I point my finger at Kit and Race. “Who’s going to tell me what thehell’s going on?”

Kit has the nerve to laugh, and I narrowmy eyes at him. He holds his hands up in surrender. “Sorry, Kate, we don’t knowanything.”

“Race?”

“Look Kate, it’s…” He trails off. Cooperand Olivia walk up to the table. Cooper holds out a chair for Olivia and shesits down, being her high and mighty self.

“Watch the dress, Cooper.” She brushesthe bottom of her dress under the table.

“Sorry,” Coop mutters, his handsclenching at his sides. He sits down on the other side of me. As far away as hecan get from Olivia.

Olivia notices my glass of wine and picksit up.

“Um—Olivia, that’s mine.”

“Oh Kitty Kat, you startled me. I didn’tsee you there.” Her eyes roam over me. Assessing every detail, no doubt. “Thatdress is nice. It suits you much better than the one you originally wanted.”

Kit chokes on his drink. He grabs anapkin, wiping his mouth, but is smiling from ear to ear.

“Thank you. I like this one much better. This dress shows off my figure. That other one would’ve made me look old.” Ipick up my wine glass and down the rest of the golden liquid. I’m definitelygoing to need a few more of these tonight.

“Kate!” Kit stands, trying to hold in hislaughter. “Don’t you owe me a dance?” He walks around the table, holding outhis hand. I take it without saying anything else. When we’re out of earshot,Kit says, “Sugar, you have cat fight written all over your face.”

“That woman is insufferable. I cantolerate a lot but she’s impossible. I will not let her treat me like that.”

“She’s the same way in the bedroom.”

I hit Kit’s arm. “Kit, have someremorse.”

He shrugs as we dance. “It happened. I’mnot going to deny it. Just live on.”

I glance back at the table, rememberingthat someone was trying to blackmail Olivia over some alleged pictures of thatnight. It makes me almost feel bad for her again. Almost.

“Penny for your thoughts?” Kit smilesdown at me. I hesitate, biting my lip. It’s not any of my business. I shouldlet it go, hope everything’s resolved and taken care of. “You’re wonderingabout the whole blackmail fiasco?” I bite my lip again and nod. “Nothing everreally came of it. They only had one picture of Olivia and me kissing in frontof my hotel room.”

“Did they figure out who was behind it?”I ask cautiously.

“They followed the trail back to an IPaddress at a coffee place that rents computers. Luke’s security waited for theblackmailer to send more pictures asking for demands, but he or she never did. They think it was Martins, but when…” Kit trails off.

“Kit?”

“I can’t tell you, Kate.”

Good grief, I want to stomp my foot anddemand answers. That would make a lovely scene. “Why can’t you tell me?” I stopdancing.

Kit gives me a lopsided grin that hassorry written all over it. “I made a promise.”

“Men and their damn promises,” I mutter.I’m so tired of being kept in the dark. “Do you know if Olivia told Preston?”

“Coulter said she did, but I guess Prestonhasn’t been the best husband either, so they called it even.”

“Sheesh, I’m sorry I asked.”

“That’s life sometimes, Sugar.”

“Yeah, if you’d told me a month ago thiswould be my life, I would’ve laughed in your face and called you crazy. Buthere I am and I’ve never been happier.”

“Well good, you and Coulter were made foreach other.”
