“Yeah, you know—each room has a differenttheme, like the Garden of Eden or Romeo and Juliet.”

“Nice. It didn’t say which room. Itsounds like fun, but it’s only for the night.”

“When do you leave for Hawaii?”

“Tomorrow afternoon sometime.”

“Kate, are you going to be in Las Vegasfor a while?”

“That’s funny you ask, because yes, we’regoing to be there the rest of the year, maybe longer. Cole wants to buy ahouse, but I said we should stay at the hotel or rent a place, but I don’tthink I’m going to win that argument. Anyhow, why do you ask?”

“I quit my job at the hospital.”

“Why?”

“I took a job with a travel nursingagency, and they asked me where I wanted to go. I told them Seattle but theydidn’t have any opening there so then I said Las Vegas.”

“Shut up, just shut up. Please tell me you’recoming to Las Vegas.”

“I’m moving to Las Vegas, for the nextthree months starting June first.”

I have one lady working on my fingers andanother working on my toes, so I can’t even move, but I want to jump up anddown and hug her. I’m so excited. “When do you move?”

“In a couple weeks. I start the firstweek of June.”

“Oh my heck, Laura, I’m so excited.”

“Me too. I wanted a new adventure, and aguy at work is a traveling nurse. He gave me the number of the agency he worksfor and a week later, I had a new job. I like Vegas and I had heard you talkingto Cole about staying. I’m not ready to live without my best friend yet.”

“Oh, I want to squeeze and hug you. I’mso excited.”

“Will you do me a favor, though?” Laurabites her lower lip.

“Sure, anything.”

“Don’t tell Race.”

“Okay, are you sure?” I give her aquestioning look.

“Yes, I’m still trying to get my stufftogether. I don’t want to lead him on.” Laura shrugs.

“Okay, I will tell Cole not to sayanything.”

When Laura and I are done, we switchplaces with my mom and Annie. “Hi, Katie I’m Heather. I’m going to do your hairtoday. Congratulations on your wedding.”

“Thanks.” Oh boy, if she’s calling meKatie, she’s had a few conversations with my mom. “Do you do my mom’s hairregularly?”

“I do. How’d you know?”

“A lucky guess.”

“So your mom thought you’d want to put itall up?” I love my mother. I repeat it ten times before I open my mouth again. She has a vision of me in her head. I hope she isn’t disappointed in the end. Ipull out my phone and scroll to the picture of my veil.

“This is my veil.” I show her the vintageveil I’m going to wear. “I think my hair will look better down, curled in softwaves.”

“That will look great with your veil.”Heather smiles, giving my shoulders a reassuring squeeze.
