“Hmm.” I open my eyes, straightening up.
“It is you.” A woman in a waitressuniform beams at me.
“Kimmie Harper.” I smile back. She looksalmost the same as she did in high school.
“I go by Kim now, and it’s Bream. I gotmarried.” She waves her diamond in front of me.
“Congratulations, Kim, that’s great.” Sheushers us to a booth, talking along the way. She says she’s been married foralmost two years and that her husband Steve is going to school to be this greatdoctor. How she always imagined herself as a doctor’s wife, but for now, shehas to help put him through school, but that someday she will have a big houseout by the canyon and drive an expensive car.
“Wow, sounds like you have your futureplanned out. That’s great.”
“What about you? Who’s this handsome manyou’re here with?” Her eyes linger on Cole. Usually this would spark jealousy, but I’m secure in my marriage and know he loves me, so it doesn’t bother me.Cole clears his throat, and I realize I’m staring at him.
“Oh sorry, this is my husband, CoulterHolt.”
“SHUT UP!” She hits me on the arm with amenu, and the few patrons in the restaurant turn and stare.
“Okay.” I shrug. I don’t really know whatto say to that, or even what to think. Is it really that big of a surprise thatI snagged a husband? Okay well, I thought it was, but that doesn’t meaneveryone else should, sheesh.
“When did you get married?”
“Congratulations,” she says.
“I’m starving.” Cole opens his menu, looking it over.
“Me too.”
“I’ll let your server know you’re readyto order.” Kim gives a friendly smile.
I order crepes and bacon and Cole gets waffles.
“So why are you sharing a room withCooper?”
“Because it’s a shitty hotel.”
“That’s a good reason.”
“There are only three suites in thehotel. My dad and Olivia took one, my grandpa took one, and Kit and Race tookthe other. They have these honeymoon type suites, but they only have one bed.Luke took one of those. Cooper and I decided to share a room.”
“I bet that has been rough.” I shake myhead, my voice full of sarcasm.
“What was tough was not being able tosleep next to you.”
“I know, me too.” I sigh. “It didn’t worktoo well for either of us.”
“Do you have your vows written?”
I give him a confused look. “I wassupposed to write my own vows?” But then smile to let him know I’m teasing.“Mostly, they need a little tweaking. What about you?”
“Mostly.”
“I’m impressed.” I wink at him. Butreally, I know Cole isn’t a last-minute kind of man. He plans and prepares.“So, what are your plans today?”
“You don’t know?”
“No, my mother wouldn’t tell me. She saidI didn’t need to worry myself about trivial things.”
