“Really?” She looks slightly alarmed. “I didn’t want to mention it back there, but it was a bit harder to hit the brake.”

“I could check it out for you,” I offer, casting a glance her way.

“That’s all right. I have plenty of mechanic friends.” Yeah, she does, all those fucking firefighters.

I frown. “How's your loverboy?” Even joking about it makes me grit my teeth.

“He isn’t my loverboy. Leon and I are friends, and you pretty much ruined my evening with him.”

“Couldn’t get me off your mind, firefly?”

A flush creeps up her cheeks and I want to keep it there. “That was a mistake,” she utters.

“Oh, but the next time it won’t be,” I say, pulling up in front of her house.

“What makes you so sure there’ll be a next time?”

“Because of the way you’re biting those lips.” She lets it go with pop, and I reach up and trace my thumb over them. “These are fucking beautiful lips.” I want to do dirty things to those lips.

Her breath hitches and I lean over the console. “You want me to kiss those lips again, firefly?” Her eyes roam my face and land on my mouth. We’re inches apart, I smirk, and a frown creases her forehead.

“Not on your life, slick. Not on your fucking life.”

“I’ll change your mind.” I lean back in the driver’s seat, satisfied that I got a reaction from her. I’ll get a whole lot more soon.

I hear a pick-up truck pull up behind me, and I know it’s Haden. “That’s my ride.”

I climb out of the car, and she follows suit, not waiting for me to open the door for her. She grabs her bag and storms into the house, not looking back. “Thank you too, baby.” I holler, and she flips me off.

“You got a smooth way with women, don’t ya?” Haden snickers when I climb into the vehicle.

“She’ll come around. If the way she kissed me last night is any indication.”

“When did that happen?” He elbows me in the side.

“When I took a bathroom break at the bar.”

He laughs so hard, he hits the steering wheel. “You asshole. She was on a date with another dude.”

“Yeah, and? Just drive me home, fucker.”

Haden shakes his head as he pulls away from the house.

“The man is insufferable.” I groan, pouring Desi and myself a glass of wine each. Brody and Lucas are playing in the backyard, and we’re on the patio. “I mean, who does he think he is kissing me in the first place?”

“You kissed him back, remember?” She rolls her eyes at me.

“You’re not helping, Desi.”

“So was it good?” She leans in closer, a grin on her face.

“No. Of course not.” But I feel a tinge of guilt for lying. That kiss has been on my mind for the last few days. It blew my mind; it awakened my senses. That kiss was wrong, I remind myself.

“You’re both single and sexy, so why not have a little fun?”
