“No,” I cut him off. “I said what I came to say. Maybe I was wrong, maybe I should have told you sooner, maybe I was selfish and immature, but I had to protect London, from you, from your indecisiveness. You chose Wyatt, and I just went along with that.”

He sits mutely.

“She’s mine . . .” The words come out softly.

“Yes, and you can be in her life if you want to, but you will be out of it just as quickly if you disappoint her.”

I stand.

“No, Hayley, wait. We need to talk about this.”

“This is all I came to say. This is it. No more.”

I put a hand up to silence him and storm back to my car. When inside, I slam my hands against the steering wheel, hot tears falling down my face.

“Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!”

How could I love and hate someone so much in equal proportions?
