“It was a mistake, Wyatt. You can’t keep blaming yourself. You were both in the firing line, in chaos and warfare every day, fighting for survival. How can you blame yourself for Josh being in the wrong place at the wrong time?”

“I just—”

“No! Losing Josh was the hardest thing I had to endure, and I didn’t think I’d breathe again . . . Until you. You came along and pulled me out of the dark place I was in. You didn’t have to, but you did, and I will always, always love you for that. I was barely living until you came along.”

Her words send an ache that reaches deep into my soul.

“Thank you,” I whisper.

“For what?”

“Thank you — for giving me the forgiveness I never felt I deserved.” My voice is hoarse with emotion.

“Wyatt, you never needed my forgiveness. But you sure as hell need your own.”
