My Neighbor, the Assassin

The sound of the engine is deafening, and when we finally come to a stop, it feels like I’ve just been on the wildest roller coaster of my life.

Rowan pats my thigh and says, “You can get off, my light.”

My body shakes uncontrollably as I climb off, and when my feet touch solid ground, my legs threaten to give way beneath me. There are strands of hair in my mouth and pretty much everywhere.

I might have swallowed a bug or two along the way.

Rowan swings his leg over, and grabbing me to his chest, his strong arms engulf me. “You did so fucking good. I’m so proud of you.”

I nod and hold on to my man because even with death chasing us through the streets of Panama City, he is unbreakable in my eyes.

If he can do all these incredible things, I can at the very least follow his orders to a T.

Standing in the arms of the man I love, a sense of safety washes through me as I put all my trust in him. Even the last one percent I was holding back just in case things didn’t work out.

No. There are no in case scenarios anymore. I’m putting all my faith in Rowan. He’ll get us to the yacht, and then we’ll sail to Colombia.

I lift my head, and as I push up on my tiptoes, Rowan’s mouth crashes against mine. His tongue surges past my lips, and I swear I can taste the adrenaline coursing through his body.

Right off the bat, the kiss is wild. I place my palms on either side of his jaw, loving how it moves as he devours me. Scraping my nails through his beard, I moan, and at this moment, I wouldn’t stop him if he decided to fuck me right here.

Luckily, Rowan still has the presence of mind to slow the kiss down until he breaks it. A grin forms on his face, and his voice is a low rumble as he says, “So being chased through the streets is a turn-on for you?”

I shake my head. “No, you being an absolute beast in badass mode does it for me.” I glance around the parking area. “What’s next?”

“We lie low for five minutes, then find another mode of transport because the motorcycle is out of gas.” Lifting his hand, he brushes his thumb over my cheek. “Then it’s on to the next stage, and we make another run for the harbor.”

I nod, my tongue darting out to swipe over my lips.

“The harbor is going to be the worst, Annie. Prepare yourself for anything and everything.”

Choosing not to let panic and fear spiral through me, I suck in a deep breath and focus on Rowan.

I believe in this man with all my heart.

We will make it to the yacht.

Chapter 28

Rowan

It takes a lot to get me worried, but after the welcome committee that greeted us, I know without a doubt the harbor is teeming with Bratva soldiers.

It’s quiet when we slip inside, and I keep Annie right behind me as I stealthily move past warehouses, toward a large stack of containers.

They’re here. I can feel them.

After we left the parking garage, I did the least conspicuous thing and hailed a cab. We slipped through the city undetected because the Bratva would never expect me to hand control over to someone else during such a high-stakes situation.

It was difficult, but it paid off.

Shadows swallow us whole as we creep along the corridor between rows of containers.

Suddenly, two men step into our path, dressed in combat gear, with their machine guns pointing down.

Idiots.

Standing out here the entire day has made them let down their guard.
