Rowan moves like a lethal, unstoppable force, his expression dead and not giving any of his thoughts away.
The smaller guy’s feet move with precision, as if he’s a snake that’s about to strike.
Rowan.
Suddenly, they collide, ripping a gasp from me. While knives flash and gleam in the lights around the dock, their fists slam into skin. Every hit Rowan takes makes me flinch because neither of them holds back, not even for a second.
God! Please.
The guy slams his knee into Rowan’s stomach, and the air explodes from me. I swear I feel some of his pain, but he doesn’t falter. Instead, his fist cracks across the man’s face, blood instantly spurting from his nose.
Yes! That’s it!
They don’t slow down but keep moving unbelievably fast, throwing punch after punch and swiping their knives at each other.
When I get a glimpse of Rowan’s front and see his shirt has been shredded, the cuts and blood make horror flood my veins. My finger tightens on the trigger again.
God, I want to help so badly, but what if I accidentally shoot Rowan?
As they take hit after hit at each other, my body keeps growing tenser, then suddenly the man buries his knife in Rowan’s side, and it rips a cry from me.
“Good one, Kirill,” the man in the suit cheers.
I glare at the asshole, then shout, “You’ve got this, my wolf! Kill the bastard!”
Suddenly, Rowan’s body spins into the air like a tornado, and the next instant, he slams his boot into Kirill’s head, making him sprawl over the dock.
As if Rowan just received a fresh burst of energy, he keeps pushing forward, delivering punches and kicks in such quick succession that Kirill doesn’t stand a chance of fighting back.
“Yes!” I cheer, excitement bubbling in my chest. “Oh my God, yes!”
Again, Rowan spins his body into the air, and this time, when his boot connects with Kirill’s jaw, it wobbles in a weird way that makes me think it just detached from his skull.
Oh gross.
As Kirill goes down, Rowan slams the knife into his chest.
Ignoring all the gore, I feel incredibly relieved and proud of my man.
Rowan
Turning to face off with Grigori, I worry whether I’ll be able to take him on.
He is well-trained and one of the most brutal men in our world.
His eyes meet mine with the calm confidence of a man who believes he already knows how this ends.
I won’t fail Annie.
Grigori rolls his shoulders while stepping forward with a smirk, giving me the impression he already considers this fight over, and I’m just the last chore left on his list.
With the taste of copper in my mouth, I brace myself as he comes straight at me without a word. His first swing is fast, and I manage to dodge it by a mere inch before driving my fist deep into his ribs as hard as my battered body will allow. The impact shudders up my arm while he barely reacts. Instead, he turns with the blow, his elbow whipping toward my temple. I duck under it and hook his knee with my arm to break his balance, but he doesn’t fall.
Grigori brings his fist down between my shoulder blades, and pain explodes down my spine while my knees threaten to buckle.
Annie.
I twist my body, and swinging my fist up, I slam two punches into his throat and jaw, hard enough to snap his head sideways while he lets out a grunt. It turns into a dark chuckle, like he’s enjoying every second of this.
