A heavy silence settles across the room.
One glance passes between the two of them, and they seem to realize they’ve said enough. Without another word, the women turn and walk away, lowering their voices.
“After everything that happened with Axel…”
“I hope they don’t get back together.”
Every word reaches me.
My jaw locks.
Heat surges through my body so violently that I instinctively take a step away from the wall beside me. For one reckless second, all I want is to drive my fist through it.
My pulse pounds in my ears.
No notice.
No explanation.
Not even a damn message.
I yank my phone from my pocket and check my emails, searching for anything from her—anything explaining where she is or how long she’ll be gone.
Nothing.
Not a single word.
She works for me. She’s responsible for this project. Yet she vanishes whenever she feels like it, without the slightest courtesy of letting me know.
“Should we install the bar now?” one of her workers asks cautiously.
I’ve memorized every page of the schedule. I know exactly what has to be done today, tomorrow, and the rest of the week.
That’s not the point. I’m supposed to supervise.
She’s supposed to be here. Instead, she disappeared.
Trying to save her relationship.
✨
A date.
Judging by the pictures splashed across every entertainment site this morning, that’s where she was.
I don’t bother reading the man’s name. But I know he isn’t her ex.
A restaurant.
Dinner.
Conversation.
Laughter.
The paparazzi caught every second of it.
Yesterday, I spent the entire day working side by side with her crew, making decisions she should have been there to make.
