Tempted To Be Mine

I knew that voice. More importantly, I knew that tone. Lucy.

Shit. I turned around.

My agent stood there in the sand, her heels sinking into it, her pantsuit looking out of place on the beach. Her hands were planted on her hips. I could see her jaw clenching. She looked absolutely pissed.

“I should have known you’d be out here cheating on me again,” she said.

I frowned, my brain trying to process the words. Cheating on her? Lucy and I had never dated. We’d never even come close to dating. We’d never slept together. Never kissed. Never so much as touched outside of a professional context. We were friends. Professionals.

So what the hell was she up to?

Behind me, Brittany made a small, startled sound. “Whoa. I didn’t know you had a girlfriend.”

Lucy’s gaze shifted to Brittany. I watched as Lucy pushed her sunglasses up. Those blue eyes flashed fire. Her blonde hair, normally perfectly styled, was flattened against her face and neck. Five feet seven inches of righteous fury stared back at me and I had no idea why.

“Fiancée,” Lucy corrected.

My jaw dropped. “Excuse me?”

Lucy held up her left hand, bare and ringless, and waved it in my direction. “Not that you’ve ever given me a ring!”

Brittany’s expression shifted from confusion to outrage. She turned to me with narrowed eyes. “You didn’t even get her a ring, you jerk?”

I shook my head, trying to catch up with whatever game Lucy was playing, and offered a chuckle that I hoped was disarming. “It’s because we’re not engaged.”

Brittany crossed her arms over her chest, and suddenly the barely there bikini seemed less inviting and more accusatory. “That’s what all cheaters say.”

“I’m not—” I started, but Lucy cut me off.

“Engaged or not, Jeremy,” she said, her voice rising with theatrical emotion, “I’m pregnant. Get ready to raise a baby with me.”

Brittany’s eyes went wide as dinner plates. She looked at Lucy, then at me, then back at Lucy. Her hand came up to cover her mouth.

“Oh my God,” she breathed. “You got her pregnant and you’re cheating on her? Wow! You’re a real piece of shit.”

“I didn’t—” I tried again.

“I’m out of here.” Brittany grabbed her piña colada and slid off the stool, giving me a look that could have curdled milk. “Good luck with your baby daddy drama. And girl,” she added, pausing to give Lucy intense eye contact, “you deserve so much better.”

She stalked off across the sand, her hips swaying with considerably less invitation than before. I watched her go, then turned back to Lucy.

Some of that bullshit bluster had faded, but now her sunglasses were back on so I couldn’t see her eyes. But I could see the way she fought to keep her lips from curling up in a grin.

I shook my head, a laugh bubbling up from my chest. “What the hell, Lucy?”

She dropped the act entirely, her hands falling from her hips. “That’s what you get for ignoring my texts.”

“I left my phone by the pool!”

“I’ve called and texted. A lot, Jeremy.”

I held up both hands and shrugged. “Oops.”

“Oops.” She rolled her eyes. “Come on. Sebastian’s ready for you. He’s going to have a stroke if you’re not back on set in the next two minutes.”

I fell into step beside her as she started back toward the hotel. Her heels were giving her trouble in the sand. I had to slow my pace to match hers.

“I can’t believe you told that girl you’re my pregnant fiancée,” I said, still chuckling.
